Why Miguel Almirón was sent off at World Cup 2026

Paraguay captain Miguel Almirón has become the first footballer to receive a red card under FIFA's newly introduced mouth-covering regulation after being dismissed during his country's FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage clash against Turkey.

The former Newcastle United winger was shown a straight red card deep into first-half stoppage time following a VAR review after covering his mouth while appearing to direct comments toward Turkish defender Mert Müldür.

At the time of the incident, Paraguay held a 1-0 lead, but Almirón's dismissal left his side to complete the remainder of the match with 10 men.

FIFA's new rule makes immediate impact

The dismissal marks the first major enforcement of FIFA's latest disciplinary regulation, which officially came into effect ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Under the revised law, players who deliberately cover their mouths during confrontations with opponents can receive a straight red card if officials believe the action is intended to conceal abusive or discriminatory language.

Referees are now encouraged to use VAR when reviewing such incidents, making Almirón's dismissal a landmark moment in the competition.

Why FIFA introduced the rule

FIFA says the regulation forms part of its wider campaign to eliminate racism, discrimination and abusive behaviour from football. The governing body believes players who intentionally cover their mouths during heated exchanges make it more difficult for match officials and video technology to identify inappropriate language.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino publicly supported the new measure before the tournament.

"If you do not have something to hide, you don't hide your mouth when you say something. That's it, as simple as that," Infantino said earlier this year.

Rule introduced following high-profile controversy

The regulation follows several incidents involving alleged discriminatory comments across European football.

One of the most widely discussed cases occurred during a UEFA Champions League match earlier this year when Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni was accused of racially abusing Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior.

Although Prestianni denied making racist remarks, he later received a six-match suspension, with half of the ban suspended, after being found guilty of homophobic conduct.

That controversy accelerated calls for stronger measures aimed at improving accountability during on-field confrontations.

A new era of player conduct

Almirón's dismissal is likely to become an important reference point as players adapt to FIFA's stricter disciplinary standards. With VAR now playing a greater role in monitoring player behaviour beyond physical fouls, footballers are expected to become increasingly cautious during verbal altercations.

As the tournament progresses, referees are expected to continue enforcing the rule consistently, making player conduct as important as on-field performance at the biggest World Cup in history.
