Man City 3-0 Crystal Palace: Foden stars as title race goes on

Manchester City kept the Premier League title race alive for at least another week after a commanding 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium.

With the pressure mounting late in the season, Pep Guardiola’s side responded with authority, moving back within two points of league leaders Arsenal with two games remaining.

City no longer control the destiny of the title race after their costly draw against Everton last week, but the champions showed no signs of surrender against a subdued Palace side already balancing domestic commitments with an upcoming European final.

Foden delivers when City needed him most

The standout performer on the night was undoubtedly Phil Foden.

Given a rare central role in Guardiola’s reshuffled side, Foden orchestrated the attack brilliantly and finished with two assists in a display that reminded supporters why he remains one of England’s elite creative players.

The breakthrough goal showcased his intelligence and technical brilliance.

Operating in a tight space, Foden produced an instinctive flick that released Antoine Semenyo, who fired a superb first-time effort into the bottom corner to hand City an early advantage.

Shortly afterwards, Foden again became the architect. His deft touch redirected a dangerous delivery into the path of Omar Marmoush, who adjusted brilliantly before beating goalkeeper Dean Henderson with a composed finish.

At 2-0, the contest already felt beyond Crystal Palace.

Guardiola rotates, but City remain ruthless

Pep Guardiola made six changes to the starting lineup, leaving several stars on the bench, including Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku, and Rayan Cherki. Despite the rotation, City dominated possession and controlled the tempo throughout.

The return of Joško Gvardiol after a lengthy absence added defensive stability, while Foden’s deployment in deeper midfield gave City additional creativity between the lines.

The third goal eventually arrived late in the game after substitute Cherki threaded an incisive pass into Savinho, who calmly finished to complete the rout. The scoreline reflected City’s efficiency as much as their control. They created three major opportunities and converted all three.

Guardiola refuses to give up on title chase

While Arsenal remain favourites to lift the Premier League trophy, Guardiola’s post-match reaction made it clear that City are still fighting until the very end. The City manager celebrated passionately at full-time, urging supporters to maintain belief as the title race heads into its final stretch.

Speaking after the match, Guardiola reserved special praise for Foden.

These type of games against a low block, they defend so well, you need quality, spark, talent,” Guardiola said. “Phil receives the ball in small spaces and creates something. The good players deliver.”

Guardiola also highlighted Foden’s adaptation to a deeper midfield role.

This is a position he’s not used to, as a holding midfielder. But close to the box, Phil is completely unique.

No manager in Guardiola’s career has gone consecutive seasons without a league title, and City’s recent performances suggest the reigning champions are determined to preserve that record.

Crystal Palace struggle to match City’s intensity

For Crystal Palace, it proved to be a frustrating evening. Manager Oliver Glasner admitted afterwards that his side failed to execute their tactical plan against City’s relentless pressure.

Palace lacked urgency in possession and rarely threatened the City goal despite occasional moments from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Yeremy Pino.

Glasner later conceded City’s quality overwhelmed his side.

“We have to accept Manchester City were too good for us,” he said. “Going to City to get a point, or more, you need to do better.”

The Eagles now shift focus toward their upcoming Conference League final later this month.

Title race heads into dramatic final weeks

The victory means the Premier League title race remains mathematically alive heading into the penultimate week of the season. Arsenal still hold the advantage, but City’s dominant back-to-back victories ensure pressure remains firmly on Mikel Arteta’s side.

Should Arsenal slip against Burnley or on the final day against Crystal Palace, Guardiola’s side stand ready to capitalise. History may not favour a comeback from this position, but Manchester City have built their modern dynasty on defying expectations.
