Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle: Eze sends Gunners top of Premier League

Arsenal reclaimed their seat at the top of the table. A solitary, shimmering strike from Eberechi Eze was enough to dismantle Newcastle United 1-0 at Emirates Stadium.

Not only did the win put the pressure back on their title rivals with just four matches remaining, but it also saw Mikel Arteta’s side etch their names into the record books for their prowess from set-pieces.

A masterclass in modern set-pieces

Arsenal’s dominance from dead-ball situations has been a theme of their season, but Saturday’s breakthrough was the masterpiece. In the 10th minute, a sophisticated corner routine caught the Magpies’ defense cold.

While Martin Ødegaard drew markers away with a clever dummy run, Noni Madueke picked out Kai Havertz in the crowded penalty area. Havertz, showing excellent vision, cushioned the ball back to the edge of the box where Eberechi Eze was waiting. The England international unleashed a clinical, arcing strike that bypassed a sprawling Nick Pope to find the top corner.

The goal marked Eze’s 10th for the Gunners, but more importantly, it was Arsenal’s 17th goal from a corner this season, officially breaking the all-time Premier League record for goals from corners in a single campaign.

Magpies miss their moments

Newcastle, despite their recent dip in league form, were far from spectators. Eddie Howe’s men exploited early gaps, with William Osula and Bruno Guimarães both seeing sights of goal in the opening exchanges.

Sandro Tonali and second-half substitute Yoane Wissa continued to probe an Arsenal backline that looked uncharacteristically nervous at times. However, the Gunners’ defensive block, led by Gabriel and William Saliba, held firm through seven minutes of agonizing stoppage time.

Injury Concerns

The win was somewhat overshadowed by a growing injury list as Arsenal prepare for their European commitments. Kai Havertz was forced off in the first half, replaced by Viktor Gyökeres, and goal-scorer Ebere Eze also exited the pitch prematurely after picking up a knock.

With a Champions League semi-final first leg against Atlético Madrid looming on April 29, Arteta will be sweating on the fitness of his key creators. On a more positive note, the Emirates welcomed back Bukayo Saka, who looked sharp in a late cameo alongside Gabriel Martinelli.

VAR Controversy at the death

The match wasn't without its share of drama. Late in the second half, Nick Pope appeared to upend Gyökeres well outside his penalty area after a heavy touch. Despite protests from the North London crowd for a red card for the denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, a VAR review controversially deemed the challenge insufficient for an ejection, sparing the Newcastle keeper.

Looking ahead

Arsenal now sit atop the pile with 12 points left to play for. The focus shifts momentarily from domestic glory to the "Estadio Metropolitano," where they face Atlético Madrid on Wednesday. If they can carry this defensive grit into Spain, a historic double remains very much on the cards
