Djokovic knocked out by 19-year-old Joao Fonseca in five-set French Open thriller

Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca announced himself on the biggest stage in tennis with a remarkable comeback victory over Novak Djokovic at the 2026 French Open, ending the Serbian legend's latest pursuit of a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title.

The 19-year-old rallied from two sets down to defeat the three-time Roland Garros champion 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 in a gripping third-round encounter that lasted four hours and 53 minutes on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

The result sends Fonseca into the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career and further reshapes a men's draw that has already been rocked by the earlier elimination of world No. 1 Jannik Sinner.

Fonseca produces career-defining performance

Djokovic appeared firmly in control after claiming the opening two sets, showcasing the experience and composure that have defined his career. However, Fonseca refused to fade away.

The Brazilian raised his level dramatically from the third set onward, striking fearlessly from the baseline and consistently taking the initiative against one of the greatest defensive players in tennis history.

His aggressive approach paid off as he captured the third set before surviving several tense moments in the fourth to force a deciding set.

Even after falling behind 3-1 in the fifth, Fonseca maintained his belief and completed a stunning turnaround, earning one of the biggest victories by a teenager in recent Grand Slam history.

Speaking after the match, Fonseca admitted he never truly expected victory despite the momentum swinging in his favour.

"I actually didn't believe I could win the match. I just kept playing and enjoying the moment."

Djokovic's Grand Slam pursuit suffers another blow

For Djokovic, the defeat represents another painful setback in his quest to move beyond Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

The Serbian has not won a major since the 2023 US Open and arrived in Paris as one of the leading contenders after injuries ruled defending champion Carlos Alcaraz out of the tournament and Sinner exited unexpectedly in the second round.

Despite the disappointment, Djokovic praised his young opponent.

The 39-year-old acknowledged that Fonseca was the superior player during the decisive stages and credited the teenager for producing elite-level tennis under immense pressure.

Djokovic's exit also guarantees that a first-time men's Grand Slam champion will be crowned at Roland Garros this year, ending a streak of nine consecutive major titles won by either Sinner or Alcaraz.

French Open Men's Draw Blown Wide Open

With both Djokovic and Sinner now eliminated, the race for the 2026 French Open title has become significantly more open.

Among the remaining contenders are:

  • Alexander Zverev
  • Casper Ruud
  • Tommy Paul
  • Andrey Rublev
  • Jakub Mensik

Fonseca will face either Ruud or Paul in the fourth round as he looks to extend the most impressive run of his young career.

Other Results: Teen Talent Continues to Shine

The tournament's youth movement continued elsewhere at Roland Garros. Nineteen-year-old Spaniard Rafael Jodar battled through a five-set thriller against Alex Michelsen, while Mensik recovered from losing the opening set 6-0 to defeat eighth seed Alex de Minaur and reach the fourth round in Paris for the first time.

Meanwhile, Dutch qualifier Jesper de Jong produced another upset by eliminating 13th seed Karen Khachanov in five sets.

What This Means for Tennis

Fonseca's victory feels significant beyond a single result. The Brazilian has long been viewed as one of the brightest young talents in the sport, but defeating Djokovic on the biggest court at Roland Garros after trailing by two sets marks a breakthrough moment.

With Djokovic approaching the latter stages of his career and both Sinner and Alcaraz absent from the final stages of this year's tournament, a new generation has been handed an opportunity to seize the spotlight.
