Moise Kouame becomes youngest Roland Garros match winner since 1991

French tennis may already have found its next major star. Seventeen-year-old Moise Kouame delivered one of the standout moments of the opening week at Roland Garros after producing a fearless performance to defeat former World No. 3 Marin Cilic on his Grand Slam debut.
The Paris-born teenager stunned the experienced Croatian 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-1 on Court Simonne-Mathieu to become the youngest man to win a main-draw match at Roland Garros since 1991.
Kouame joins rare tennis company
The victory instantly placed Kouame among some elite teenage names in modern tennis history. At just 17 years old, the Frenchman became:
- The first male player born in 2008 or later to win a Grand Slam match
- The youngest Roland Garros men’s match winner since Dinu Pescariu in 1991
- One of the youngest players this century to defeat a former Grand Slam champion at a major tournament
The age difference between Kouame and the 37-year-old Cilic was also one of the biggest ever recorded in a men’s Grand Slam singles match during the Open Era. Yet despite the occasion and atmosphere, the teenager showed remarkable composure throughout.
Kouame outplays former US Open champion
Cilic arrived in Paris with enormous experience, including a US Open title and a previous Roland Garros semifinal appearance.
Early in the match, the Croatian attempted to overpower the teenager with aggressive serving and baseline pressure.
But Kouame remained calm under pressure, saving all three break points he faced during the opening set before dominating the tie-break.
From there, momentum completely shifted. The French teenager attacked confidently from both wings, moved brilliantly across the clay, and repeatedly forced errors from the veteran.
He converted four of seven break-point opportunities and controlled the match physically and tactically during the final two sets.
Paris crowd witnesses birth of a new star
The atmosphere inside Roland Garros grew louder with every game. Just one day after the tournament emotionally celebrated Gael Monfils’ final appearance in Paris, French fans suddenly found themselves embracing another exciting homegrown talent.
Several points during the match even drew comparisons with Monfils because of Kouame’s athletic shot-making and creativity.
One rally in the third set especially brought the crowd to life after Kouame produced a stunning defensive retrieval before acknowledging the roaring supporters.
Rapid Rise Continues For Kouame
This breakthrough did not arrive out of nowhere.
Kouame has quietly built serious momentum throughout the 2026 season.
The teenager:
- Won two ITF titles earlier this year
- Qualified for an ATP Tour event in Montpellier at just 16
- Became the youngest match winner in Miami Open history
- Received encouragement from Novak Djokovic after his Miami breakthrough
- Practiced with Jannik Sinner during the clay season
Now, Roland Garros has become the biggest moment of his young career so far.
Rankings surge already underway
Kouame began the year ranked outside the world’s Top 800. After his victory over Cilic, he is projected to break into the ATP Top 250 for the first time in his career, an extraordinary rise in just a few months.
The Frenchman will next face Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in the second round as he attempts to continue his dream run in Paris. Regardless of what happens next, French tennis fans already have a compelling new name to follow.
