Jannik Sinner retains Wimbledon title after beating Alexander Zverev

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner reinforced his position as the leading force in men's tennis after defeating Alexander Zverev to successfully defend his Wimbledon title.

The Italian recovered from losing a dramatic opening-set tiebreak before producing a composed display to earn a 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, 6-4 victory on Centre Court, capturing his second consecutive Wimbledon championship.

The triumph also secured the fifth Grand Slam title of Sinner's career and his first major trophy of the 2026 season.

Sinner overcomes early pressure

The final began with both players serving confidently in an evenly balanced contest. Fresh from winning his maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, Zverev played with aggression and confidence, edging a tense first-set tiebreak to take an early advantage.

Rather than allowing the match to slip away, Sinner responded with the composure that has defined his rise to the top of the ATP rankings.

The defending champion dominated the second-set tiebreak before gradually taking control through superior movement, cleaner ball striking and relentless baseline consistency.

Momentum shifts in the Third Set

With the match level, Sinner began dictating longer rallies while forcing Zverev into increasingly difficult defensive positions. A crucial break midway through the third set allowed the Italian to move ahead for the first time, and he never looked back.

Although Zverev continued to battle, Sinner's precision on serve and ability to convert key opportunities proved decisive. After three hours and 46 minutes of high-quality tennis, Sinner sealed victory before collapsing onto the grass in celebration.

By successfully defending his title, Sinner becomes only the 10th man in the Open Era to win consecutive Wimbledon championships. The victory also extends his remarkable dominance over Zverev, with the Italian now winning 10 consecutive matches against the German.

His consistency across all surfaces has firmly established him as the player to beat on the ATP Tour.

Star-Studded final on Centre Court

The Wimbledon final attracted several notable figures to Centre Court. Among those watching were the Prince and Princess of Wales, alongside Hollywood actors Nicole Kidman and Ben Stiller, as fans witnessed one of the highest-quality men's finals of the season.

The atmosphere reflected the growing rivalry between two of the game's biggest stars, with both players producing spectacular shot-making throughout the afternoon.

Respect between rivals

Despite the disappointment, Zverev acknowledged Sinner's superiority after the match. The German joked during the trophy presentation that he did not "like" Sinner anymore because of the Italian's dominance over him before praising the world No. 1's consistency.

Sinner also paid tribute to his opponent. "It has been another amazing final," he said.

"It always takes two players to produce a match like this. I'm very happy with the victory and the level we both played."

Sinner's latest triumph strengthens his grip on the ATP rankings as he continues to establish himself as the dominant player in men's tennis.

For Zverev, reaching consecutive Grand Slam finals signals continued progress after finally breaking through with his French Open victory earlier this year.

The German will move to World No. 2 in the updated ATP rankings, replacing the injured Carlos Alcaraz. With both players entering the North American hard-court swing in strong form, their rivalry appears set to remain one of the defining stories of the 2026 season.
