Egypt secure first-ever World Cup knockout victory against Australia

Egypt reached another milestone in their football history after defeating Australia 4-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The victory delivered the Pharaohs' first-ever triumph in a World Cup knockout match and sent them into the Round of 16, where an even tougher challenge now awaits.

Bright start gives Egypt an early advantage

Egypt made an aggressive start and were rewarded inside the opening quarter of an hour. Midfielder Emam Ashour opened the scoring in the 13th minute after the Australians struggled to deal with sustained Egyptian pressure, giving the African side an early lead and confidence.

Australia responded positively but struggled to create clear-cut chances against a disciplined Egyptian defence.

Own goal brings Australia back into the match

Australia eventually found a route back into the contest through an unfortunate moment for Egypt. Defender Mohamed Hany inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, allowing the Socceroos to level the score at 1-1 and restore parity before the match entered its decisive stages.

With neither side able to find another breakthrough during regulation time or extra time, the contest headed for penalties.

Egypt hold their nerve from the spot

The shootout showcased Egypt's composure under pressure. The Pharaohs converted all four of their penalty kicks, while Australia's hopes faded after Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington both failed to convert their attempts.

Australia had made one final tactical gamble moments before the shootout by introducing experienced goalkeeper Mathew Ryan in place of Patrick Beach, but the change failed to alter the outcome. Egypt remained flawless from the spot to seal a memorable victory.

Historic achievement for the Pharaohs

The result represents one of the biggest moments in Egyptian football history. Playing in only their fourth FIFA World Cup tournament, Egypt had never previously won a knockout match on football's biggest stage.

Friday's victory changes that narrative and continues the nation's impressive run at the expanded 2026 tournament.

Australia fall short again

For Australia, disappointment continues. The Socceroos were hoping to register their first-ever victory in the knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup but instead suffered another painful exit.

Despite battling back into the match after falling behind early, they could not capitalize during extra time before their penalty shootout struggles ended their campaign.

Eyes turn to the Round of 16

Egypt will now prepare for another historic challenge. The Pharaohs are set to face the winner of the Round of 32 clash between Argentina and Cape Verde, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

Having already broken new ground, Egypt will believe they can continue their remarkable World Cup journey.
