Chelsea confirm Danny Welbeck signing on two-year deal

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Danny Welbeck from Brighton on a two-year contract, giving head coach Xabi Alonso an experienced attacking option ahead of the new season.

The 35-year-old former England international arrives at Stamford Bridge after enjoying the most productive league campaign of his career, scoring 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances for Brighton. Only three English players scored more league goals last season.

Neither Chelsea nor Brighton disclosed the transfer fee.

Welbeck: “I’ve got fire in my belly”

Speaking after completing the move, Welbeck said the interest from Chelsea was a source of immense pride and revealed he had already held positive discussions with Alonso and several members of the squad.

“I’ve got that fire in my belly and I’m ready to give it everything for this club,” Welbeck said.

The striker added that he is eager to contribute both on and off the pitch and help Chelsea challenge for honours.

Third signing of the summer

Welbeck becomes Chelsea’s third senior signing of the transfer window, following the arrivals of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and Marco Palestra from Atalanta.

His signing is notable because it represents a departure from the club’s recent recruitment policy, which has largely focused on younger players since the ownership change in 2022.

After several injury-hit years earlier in his career, Welbeck made 37 league appearances last season, including 26 starts, providing evidence that he can still handle the demands of a full Premier League campaign.

Competition up front

Welbeck’s arrival increases competition among Chelsea’s forwards. The club still has Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu and Nicolas Jackson under contract, although Welbeck is expected to offer a different profile rather than compete directly as the primary goalscorer.

Joao Pedro is currently viewed internally as the leading central attacking option, while Welbeck is likely to be valued for his flexibility, experience and ability to influence games through movement and pressing.

Career journey continues

Welbeck came through the academy at Manchester United before joining Arsenal in 2014. After five seasons in north London, he spent a year at Watford and moved to Brighton in 2020, where he became an important figure under multiple managers.

Internationally, he earned 42 caps for England, scoring 16 goals, although he has not represented the national team since 2018 and was not included in England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Why Chelsea see value in the deal

Chelsea’s recent transfer activity has often focused on potential and resale value. Welbeck offers something different: immediate reliability, Premier League experience and tactical maturity.
