Chelsea confirm Xabi Alonso as new manager on four-year deal

Chelsea have officially appointed Xabi Alonso as their new head coach on a four-year contract beginning in July, the Premier League club announced on Sunday, handing the Spaniard the task of restoring the club's standing after a chaotic and silverware-free campaign.

The confirmation arrives just 24 hours after Chelsea fell to a 1-0 defeat against Manchester City in the FA Cup final, a result that extinguished any remaining hope of rescuing the season with a trophy.

"Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club," Alonso said in a statement. "From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition."

The 44-year-old inherits a club in considerable disarray. Two managers, Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior, were dismissed during the season, the latter shown the door in April following seven defeats in eight matches across all competitions.

Chelsea face major rebuild challenge

Chelsea currently sit ninth in the Premier League with two games remaining, clinging to a slim outside chance of European qualification. Alonso's brief is clear. "

We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies," he said. "There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies."

Why Chelsea chose Alonso

The appointment also marks Alonso's return to English football. As a player, he made 210 appearances for Liverpool before departing for Real Madrid in 2009 and eventually ending his career at Bayern Munich in 2017.

He won 114 caps for Spain, collecting a World Cup winners' medal and two European Championship titles along the way, as well as LaLiga, two Copa del Rey trophies, and the club's tenth European Cup during his time at Real Madrid.

His managerial career began in Real Madrid's youth setup before he took charge of Real Sociedad's reserve side. He truly announced himself as a top-level coach at Bayer Leverkusen, where he arrived in 2022 and steered the club to a historic unbeaten Bundesliga title in 2023-24, complemented by the German Cup and a run to the Europa League final.

That remarkable achievement earned him a return to Real Madrid as first-team coach, though the spell proved short-lived amid reported friction with senior figures including Federico Valverde and Vinicius Jr, and he was sacked in January after fewer than eight months in charge.

Alonso becomes the fifth permanent managerial appointment under Chelsea's BlueCo ownership, following Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Maresca and Rosenior. The American-led group has spent in excess of £1.8 billion on player recruitment since taking over in 2022, yet consistent progress has remained elusive.

The club began this season as FIFA Club World Cup champions but deteriorated sharply, with fan discontent spilling into organised protest, supporters' group Not a Project staged a demonstration ahead of Saturday's FA Cup final at Wembley.

Caretaker manager Calum McFarlane will remain in charge for the remainder of the current campaign, beginning with a home Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.
