Cabo Verde qualify for Round of 32 after Saudi Arabia draw

Cabo Verde produced another unforgettable moment in their football history after booking a place in the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a resilient goalless draw against Saudi Arabia.

The result was enough for the Blue Sharks to finish second in Group H and qualify for the Round of 32 in their first-ever World Cup appearance, capping an extraordinary group-stage campaign few predicted before the tournament began. The African nation will now face defending champions Argentina in one of the standout fixtures of the knockout stage.

Blue Sharks stand firm under pressure

Knowing a point could be enough depending on results elsewhere, Cabo Verde adopted a disciplined approach while still creating the better attacking opportunities throughout the contest.

Willy Semedo looked the most dangerous player on the pitch, forcing an early save from Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais before later dragging another effort narrowly wide.

Cabo Verde continued to threaten after the break as Kevin Pina came within inches of opening the scoring with a powerful strike from outside the penalty area that narrowly missed the top corner.

Their best opportunity arrived in the closing stages when Laros Duarte broke through on goal, only for Al Owais to produce an excellent save that kept Saudi Arabia alive.

Saudi Arabia exit despite brave display

Saudi Arabia's hopes suffered an early setback when defender Hassan Al Tambakti was forced off on a stretcher following an injury midway through the first half. Despite battling throughout the contest, the Green Falcons struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against a well-organised Cape Verde defence.

The draw ultimately left Saudi Arabia behind the Blue Sharks in the standings, ending their World Cup campaign on home soil preparations ahead of hosting the 2034 tournament.

Dramatic qualification confirmed

The tension continued after the final whistle. Cabo Verde's players gathered around a mobile phone to follow the closing moments of Uruguay's meeting with Spain, knowing their qualification depended on events elsewhere.

When Uruguay's defeat was confirmed, celebrations erupted as Cabo Verde officially secured one of the biggest achievements in the country's sporting history.

The Blue Sharks finished ahead of both Uruguay and Saudi Arabia in one of the tournament's toughest groups after earning impressive results against Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.

Dream debut continues

Ranked 67th in the FIFA World Rankings before the tournament, Cape Verde have become one of the surprise packages of the competition.

Their unbeaten group-stage campaign makes them only the third African nation to avoid defeat during the group phase on their World Cup debut and the first African debutants to reach the knockout rounds since Ghana achieved the feat in 2006.

Head coach Bubista has overseen a disciplined, fearless team that has earned widespread admiration across the football world.

Argentina await in the Round of 32

Cabo Verde's reward is a glamorous showdown against reigning world champions Argentina and Lionel Messi.

While the South American giants will start as overwhelming favourites, Cabo Verde have already demonstrated throughout the tournament that they are capable of frustrating elite opposition.

Midfielder Deroy Duarte summed up the emotions after the historic qualification.

"Honestly, it feels unreal. Ever since I was a child, I've dreamed of playing in the World Cup. Making history with Cape Verde is something I never imagined."

He added that the squad would enjoy the moment before turning their attention to the challenge ahead.

"Now we celebrate. Tomorrow we focus on Argentina. It's a huge game, but in football anything is possible."

After stunning the football world simply by reaching the knockout stage, the Blue Sharks now have another opportunity to extend one of the greatest underdog stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
