Brighton stun Arsenal 3-0 as champions suffer first defeat of season

Brighton & Hove Albion produced one of the biggest results of the early Premier League season by beating defending champions Arsenal 3-0 at the American Express Stadium.

Pascal Gross, Charalampos Kostoulas and Chema Andres were on target as Fabian Hurzeler's side punished Arsenal's struggles under pressure and handed the champions their first defeat of the campaign.

Arsenal had started the season with nine consecutive league victories and seven wins in all competitions, but Brighton's intensity prevented them from finding their usual rhythm.

Gross gives Brighton the lead

Brighton took control in the 31st minute when Gross opened the scoring with a shot from the edge of the area that went in off the post.

The goal reflected Brighton's attacking approach, with the hosts consistently putting Arsenal under pressure and limiting their ability to build comfortably from the back.

Arsenal had a chance to respond shortly before half-time when the ball fell to Bukayo Saka inside the area after a deflected Martin Odegaard effort, but the winger could not convert.

Brighton immediately punished that missed opportunity.

Kostoulas doubles the advantage

Just seconds after Saka's missed chance, Kostoulas doubled Brighton's lead.

The 19-year-old forward was given space on the edge of the box before turning and firing beyond David Raya to make it 2-0.

It was Kostoulas' third goal in successive matches and another indication of his growing importance to Brighton's attack following Danny Welbeck's summer departure to Chelsea.

The hosts went into the interval two goals ahead.

Andres completes Brighton's victory

Mikel Arteta made no changes at half-time as Arsenal looked for a response, but Brighton continued to control the contest.

Twelve minutes after the restart, Andres made it 3-0 by heading in from a Gross corner.

It was the Spaniard's first goal for Brighton and came in his first Premier League start for the club.

The goal completed a remarkable week for Brighton, who had already scored five against Coventry City and produced a 3-2 comeback victory at Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.

Arsenal struggle to create

Arsenal managed only two shots on target as Brighton's pressure repeatedly disrupted their possession.

Raya, normally reliable when playing out from the back, looked uncomfortable at times under the hosts' pressure, while Arsenal also struggled to win enough physical duels in midfield.

Bruno Guimaraes made his first league start but struggled to establish an effective partnership with Declan Rice and Odegaard.

Kai Havertz had a late opportunity to reduce the deficit after getting through on goal, but he shot straight at Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

Brighton almost added a fourth when former Leeds defender Pascal Struijk headed wide from another corner, while Matt O'Riley was denied by Raya at the other end.

Brighton move third

The victory moved Brighton up to third in the Premier League table, two points behind the leaders.

Arsenal remained second on goal difference but had played one match more than Manchester City, who were due to host Sunderland on Sunday.

The result also ended Arsenal's perfect league start and provided Brighton with another major statement after their midweek victory over Manchester United.

Gross and Kostoulas lead Brighton's attack

Gross was again central to Brighton's performance.

The 35-year-old midfielder, who returned to the club in January from Borussia Dortmund, scored the opener and supplied the corner for Andres' third goal.

He now has four goals in his last five matches.

Kostoulas was another standout performer, with his goal against Arsenal extending his scoring run to three consecutive matches.

Brighton's attacking threat was also supported by Diego Gomez, who impressed on the wing and helped keep Riccardo Calafiori quiet.

The Seagulls' combination of young talent, intensity and attacking confidence has now produced difficult tests for both Manchester United and Arsenal in the space of a few days.
