Aston Villa wrapped up their pre-season tour of Asia with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in Hong Kong, as the Bundesliga champions punished Unai Emery's side with clinical finishing despite a determined late response.

Goals from Kim Min-jae and Luis Díaz handed Bayern control of the contest before new signing João Gomes produced a stunning strike to give Villa hope in the closing stages. However, Manuel Neuer denied Tammy Abraham a dramatic equaliser as Vincent Kompany's men held on for victory.

Bayern Capitalise After Competitive Opening

Villa matched Bayern during the opening exchanges at Kai Tak Sports Park, with both sides creating half chances in an entertaining first half.

Summer signing João Gomes produced the game's brightest moment for the Premier League side when he controlled a cross on the edge of the area before calmly finishing beyond Manuel Neuer to reduce the deficit.

The goal sparked Villa into life.

Tammy Abraham nearly completed the comeback moments later, directing a powerful header towards goal, only for the experienced Neuer to produce a superb reflex save.

Villa continued to push during stoppage time, but Bayern remained composed to secure victory.

Encouraging Signs Despite Defeat

While the result ended Villa's successful tour of the Far East on a disappointing note, Emery will still take positives from the performance.

Bizot impressed throughout with a string of quality saves, João Gomes opened his account for the club, and several younger players gained valuable minutes against elite opposition.

Villa now turn their attention to a demanding finish to pre-season, beginning with the UEFA Super Cup clash against Paris Saint-Germain before one final friendly against Borussia Mönchengladbach ahead of their Premier League opener.

Bayern, meanwhile, continue preparations for the new campaign with another friendly against RB Leipzig before facing Borussia Dortmund in the DFL-Supercup as they aim to defend their Bundesliga title.
