Arthur Fils beats Tiafoe to win Cincinnati Masters 1000

Arthur Fils has secured the biggest title of his career after defeating Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 in a dramatic Cincinnati Open final on Sunday. The 22-year-old Frenchman recovered from a second-set collapse to dominate the deciding set, completing a landmark victory that places his name among the tournament's historic champions.

The final was also significant beyond the result. Fils and Tiafoe became the first two Black players to meet in an ATP Masters 1000 final, marking a notable moment in men's tennis.

Fils makes history in Cincinnati

Fils becomes the third Black man to win an ATP Masters 1000 title, joining Ben Shelton and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He is also the youngest Frenchman ever to win a Masters 1000 title and only the second French player to capture the Cincinnati crown, following Guy Forget's triumph in 1991.

For Fils, the achievement represents a remarkable response to a difficult period. The Frenchman missed the French Open because of a hip injury and subsequently suffered an early exit in Washington. His Cincinnati run has now transformed what had been a frustrating stretch into the biggest breakthrough of his career.

“People think that I'm done. But here we are. I got the title.”

The victory adds another major achievement to Fils' 2026 season, which already includes an ATP 500 title in Barcelona and deep runs at several Masters 1000 events.

Fils starts fast before Tiafoe responds

The opening set belonged to Fils. The Frenchman immediately put Tiafoe under pressure, winning 12 of the first 13 points to establish a 3-0 advantage. Tiafoe struggled to find his rhythm as Fils controlled the early exchanges with his serve and aggressive baseline play. The Frenchman eventually secured the opening set 6-3.

The momentum completely shifted in the second.

Tiafoe responded with a dominant start of his own, racing into a 3-0 lead before eventually levelling the match at 1-6. The American had forced the contest into a deciding set, but the physical demands of the match appeared to take their toll.

Tiafoe used the break before the third set to stretch and receive treatment on his upper left leg and lower back. He later acknowledged that his hip had bothered him during the match, although he played down its significance ahead of the US Open.

Fils dominates the deciding set

The final set proved to be a one-sided affair. Fils immediately regained control and did not allow Tiafoe to establish any momentum, winning the deciding set 6-0 to complete the championship victory.

The Frenchman finished with 11 aces and won 71% of points behind his first serve. The victory also extended two impressive records for Fils. He is now 10-0 in deciding sets in 2026 and has won all eight of his matches against American opponents this season.

He also holds a 2-0 record against Tiafoe, having previously defeated the American in three sets at the 2025 Miami Open.

Tiafoe falls short again

For Tiafoe, Cincinnati once again ended in disappointment. The American had reached the final in 2024, where he lost to Jannik Sinner, and was attempting to become the first American man to win the tournament since Andy Roddick in 2006.

Despite the defeat, Tiafoe described his run to the final as a positive response to a difficult summer.

“I was able to play five great matches and beat quality players.”

Tiafoe also joked about having two Cincinnati final trophies at home, while acknowledging that he would have preferred to have won both. The 28-year-old now turns his attention to the US Open, with the Grand Slam beginning next week.

A major statement before the US Open

Fils' victory gives him significant momentum heading into New York. The Frenchman has already demonstrated that he can compete consistently at Masters 1000 level this season, but defeating a player of Tiafoe's quality in a final and recovering from a poor second set adds another dimension to his growing reputation.

More importantly, the Cincinnati triumph gives Fils his first Masters 1000 trophy at just 22. For a player who was forced to miss his home Grand Slam because of injury earlier this year, the timing could hardly be better.

And with the US Open now around the corner, Fils believes his approach will remain simple: stay positive, keep finding solutions and build on the biggest victory of his career.
