Arthur Fils beats Rublev to win Barcelona Open title

Arthur Fils delivered a composed and powerful performance to defeat Andrey Rublev 6-2, 7-6(2) and win the Barcelona Open on Sunday. The victory marks Fils’ fourth ATP title, and his first since returning from a lengthy injury layoff earlier this year.

The match didn’t begin in Fils’ favor.

A couple of early errors handed Rublev an immediate break, but the 21-year-old responded impressively. He broke back to level at 2-2 and quickly took control, using sharp forehand returns and aggressive baseline play to dominate the rallies.

Fils surged through the remainder of the set, winning it 6-2 in just 31 minutes.

Momentum carries into second set

Fils’ dominance continued into the second set, as he strung together seven consecutive games across both sets.

Rublev, however, showed resilience. The fifth seed fought through a grueling 13-minute game, saving seven break points to hold serve and stay in contention.

The second set turned into a battle of nerves.

Fils appeared set to close out the match at 5-3 but faltered, committing three consecutive errors to hand Rublev a lifeline. The Russian capitalized, saving three match points and briefly taking control by going 6-5 up.

But Fils refused to fade.

He broke straight back to force a tiebreak and then produced a clinical display, racing to a 7-2 win to seal the title. This triumph is particularly significant for Fils, who only returned to action in February after nearly eight months out due to injury.

  • 4th ATP title overall
  • 3rd title on clay
  • First title since 2024

His performance in Barcelona highlights both his physical recovery and growing maturity on the ATP Tour.

A rising force on Clay

Fils’ blend of power, precision, and composure under pressure proved too much for Rublev, one of the tour’s most consistent performers. With the clay season in full swing, this victory positions the young Frenchman as a serious contender heading into the bigger European tournaments.
