Arsenal 0-0 Sporting (1-0 agg): Gunners reach UCL semifinals, set up Atlético clash

Arsenal secured their place in the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League after a tense 0-0 draw against Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium. A narrow first-leg advantage, earned through Kai Havertz’s late goal in Portugal, proved decisive, as Mikel Arteta’s side advanced 1-0 on aggregate.

Despite a bright start from Arsenal, it was Sporting who carved out the better chances in the first half. Francisco Trincão and Pedro Gonçalves both tested the hosts, while a loose moment from goalkeeper David Raya nearly gifted an opening.

The closest chance fell to Geny Catamo, who struck the post with a powerful volley after a dangerous delivery from Maxi Araújo.

Tension inside the Emirates

With Arsenal defending a slender lead, the atmosphere inside the Emirates grew increasingly tense as the game wore on. Sporting continued to push after the break, with Araújo firing wide from inside the area in their best chance of the second half.

Arsenal, meanwhile, came close to sealing the tie late on when Leandro Trossard headed against the post from a corner.

Historic progress for Arteta’s side

The result marks a significant milestone for Arsenal, who have now reached back-to-back Champions League semifinals for the first time in their history. While the performance lacked fluency, the resilience shown under pressure could prove vital as they progress deeper into the competition.

Arteta opted for a front three featuring Viktor Gyökeres, Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli, but the combination struggled to find rhythm. Madueke was later forced off with injury, adding to Arsenal’s concerns ahead of a crucial domestic fixture.

Sporting impress despite exit

For Sporting CP, the exit will feel harsh. Rui Borges’s side pushed Arsenal all the way across both legs, hitting the woodwork multiple times and consistently threatening through midfield creativity and pace in wide areas.

Late substitute João Simões nearly forced extra time, but his effort drifted just wide in the closing moments.

What’s next

Arsenal now prepare for a heavyweight semi-final clash against Atlético Madrid. Before that, Arteta’s side face a crucial Premier League showdown with Manchester City as they continue their push for domestic silverware.

Sporting, meanwhile, turn their attention back to league action with a high-stakes clash against SL Benfica. It wasn’t pretty, but it was effective. Arsenal showed grit and composure to protect their advantage, and in knockout football, that’s often all that matters.
