Argentina 3-2 Egypt: Late comeback seals quarter-final spot

Argentina kept their FIFA World Cup title defence alive with an extraordinary 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt, recovering from two goals down to book their place in the quarter-finals in one of the greatest knockout matches in tournament history.
The reigning champions appeared to be heading for a stunning exit after goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko put Egypt firmly in control. However, a remarkable late surge led by Lionel Messi turned the contest on its head before Enzo Fernandez completed the comeback in stoppage time.
The victory sends Lionel Scaloni's side into the last eight, where they will face the winner of Colombia and Switzerland.
Egypt dream of historic upset
Egypt entered the knockout stage for the first time in their history and looked determined to extend their remarkable run.
The Pharaohs stunned Argentina in the 15th minute when defender Yasser Ibrahim powered home a header to give the African champions an early advantage.
Goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir then produced one of the performances of the tournament. The Al Ahly shot-stopper denied Messi from the penalty spot after Nicolas Tagliafico won a spot-kick before making outstanding saves from Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez to preserve Egypt's lead.
Ziko doubles Egypt's advantage
Egypt thought they had doubled their lead shortly before the hour when Mostafa Ziko finished after brilliant work from Mohamed Salah and Haissem Hassan, only for VAR to rule the goal out for a foul in the build-up.
The disappointment proved temporary.
In the 67th minute, Egypt launched another devastating counterattack. Salah and Hassan combined brilliantly before Ziko finished confidently from close range to make it 2-0 and leave Argentina facing elimination.
Messi leads Argentina's fightback
Just when Egypt looked set to produce one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history, Argentina responded. Cristian Romero reduced the deficit in the 79th minute after Messi created the opening, giving the South Americans renewed belief.
Only five minutes later, Messi produced another magical moment.
The Argentina captain fired home a superb finish to level the match and ignite celebrations among thousands of Argentine supporters inside Atlanta Stadium. The goal extended Messi's remarkable streak to nine consecutive World Cup matches with a goal while taking his tally at the tournament to eight.
Fernandez completes stunning turnaround
With extra time looming, Argentina completed an unforgettable comeback. Deep into stoppage time, Enzo Fernandez met a dangerous cross with a perfectly placed header that found the net and secured a dramatic 3-2 victory.
The goal completed one of the greatest escapes in World Cup history.
According to FIFA, Argentina became the first team ever to win a World Cup knockout match in regulation time after trailing by two goals beyond the 75th minute.
Messi breaks more records
Although Messi missed a first-half penalty, his second penalty miss of the tournament, he still delivered another historic performance.
The 39-year-old:
- Scored in a record nine consecutive World Cup matches
- Extended his tally to eight goals at the 2026 tournament
- Moved two goals clear of Kylian Mbappe on the all-time World Cup scoring list
- Took the outright lead in the Golden Boot race with eight goals
His leadership once again proved decisive when Argentina needed him most.
Heartbreak for Egypt
For long periods, Egypt looked set to eliminate the defending champions. Their disciplined defending, rapid counterattacks and heroic goalkeeping frustrated Argentina for over 75 minutes. Ultimately, however, the relentless pressure from the world champions proved too much.
Despite the painful defeat, Egypt leave the tournament with their heads held high after reaching the knockout stages for the first time in the nation's history and pushing one of football's greatest teams to the limit.
Argentina, meanwhile, continue their quest to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup.
