Zverev kicks off new season with victory at the United Cup as Czech Republic defeats Norway

Alexander Zverev (27) comfortably defeated Thiago Monteiro with a score of 6-4, 6-4, contributing to Germany's victory over Brazil in their opening match of the United Cup on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Czech Republic triumphed over Norway in a closely contested encounter.
Zverev had previously faced a significant setback due to an ankle ligament injury sustained at the 2022 French Open but has since reclaimed his career-high ranking of number two following his success at the Paris Masters last month.
The 27-year-old showcased his strong form in this mixed team tournament, which marks the beginning of the new season. He utilized his powerful baseline shots to secure an early break in the first game and clinched the opening set with a formidable ace.
At the start of the second set, Zverev elevated his performance with an impressive backhand winner, achieving another break before comfortably closing out the match, thereby giving Germany a decisive 2-0 lead prior to the mixed doubles event.
"I am very pleased to be back and representing team Germany," Zverev remarked. "Perth is one of my favorite cities in Australia, and I truly enjoy my time here."
Earlier, Laura Siegemund secured Germany's first point in the Group E match by defeating Beatriz Haddad Maia with a scoreline of 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 at the RAC Arena.
In another match, former French Open finalist Karolina Muchova commenced her campaign with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Malene Helgo in Sydney. However, Norway equalized in the Group B contest thanks to Casper Ruud's determined performance.
Ruud required a couple of medical timeouts due to a left thigh issue but ultimately overcame Thomas Machac with a score of 7-6, 5-7, 6-4. Unfortunately, the world number six was unable to participate in the subsequent mixed doubles match.
United Cup newcomer Muchova and Machac quickly adapted to the rapid transition from their singles matches, defeating Ulrikke Eikeri and Viktor Durasovic with a score of 6-4, 6-4 at the Ken Rosewall Arena.
