Vitinha wins UEFA Champions League Final Player of the Match Award

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Vitinha has been officially named UEFA's Player of the Match following PSG's dramatic victory over Arsenal in the 2026 UEFA Champions League final.

The Portuguese international played a pivotal role as PSG successfully defended their European title, defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties after a fiercely contested 1-1 draw across 120 minutes at Budapest's Puskas Arena.

While goals from Kai Havertz and Ousmane Dembele dominated the headlines, UEFA's Technical Observer Group singled out Vitinha's influence in midfield as the defining individual performance of the final.

Why Vitinha won the award

Explaining the decision, UEFA's Technical Observer Group praised the 26-year-old for controlling the tempo and rhythm of the game when it mattered most.

According to UEFA's assessment:

"Vitinha was Paris' best player on the night. He took charge in midfield – particularly in the second half – driving his team forward and setting the tempo. It was an excellent performance from the Portuguese midfielder."

As Arsenal attempted to protect their early lead, Vitinha increasingly became PSG's creative and tactical heartbeat, helping Luis Enrique's side regain control of possession and territory.

His calmness under pressure, intelligent positioning, and progressive passing allowed PSG to build momentum during the second half before eventually finding an equaliser through Dembele's penalty.

Midfield masterclass on Europe's biggest stage

The Champions League final often rewards players who rise to the occasion under immense pressure, and Vitinha delivered one of the most mature performances of his career.

Throughout the match, he consistently linked defence and attack, dictated possession, and helped PSG maintain composure during difficult moments.

His influence became even more apparent during extra time when fatigue affected both sides. Vitinha continued to circulate possession efficiently and provided the platform for PSG to remain competitive until the penalty shootout.

Although goal scorers often attract the spotlight in major finals, UEFA's technical panel recognised the midfielder's broader contribution to PSG's success.

Another milestone in Vitinha's rise

The award adds another significant achievement to Vitinha's growing reputation as one of Europe's elite midfielders.

Since joining PSG, the Portuguese playmaker has evolved into a central figure within the club's tactical structure and has become one of the most consistent performers in European football.

Winning Player of the Match in a Champions League final places him alongside some of the game's biggest names who have previously earned the honour.
