Tottenham 0-2 Newcastle Player Ratings

Newcastle United claimed their first Premier League victory under Matthias Jaissle with a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, producing a composed second-half display to leave Spurs without a league goal after their opening two matches.

Anthony Elanga opened the scoring just after the hour mark before Yoane Wissa produced an acrobatic finish 10 minutes later to seal the points for the visitors.

While Tottenham created opportunities before the breakthrough, Newcastle's defence held firm, with goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek making several important interventions during a first half in which the hosts had the better of the chances.

The result lifts Newcastle into fourth place, while Tottenham remain bottom of the early Premier League table without a point or a goal.

Had little to do during the opening period but was beaten by Elanga's low effort after the break. Could do little about Wissa's improvised finish.

Worked hard but was unable to consistently influence proceedings from the right-back position as Newcastle became increasingly dangerous.

Micky van de Ven: 6/10

Made his first start of the campaign and recovered well after an early booking. Produced an important sliding challenge to prevent Wissa from threatening inside the area.

Jan Paul van Hecke: 6/10

Provided composure when Tottenham were attempting to play through Newcastle's pressure. Also made a timely block and came close with a header.

Andy Robertson: 5/10

Provided some attacking impetus early on but was unable to prevent Amar Dedic from winning the header that ultimately created the opening for Elanga.

Rodrigo Bentancur: 5/10

Put in plenty of defensive work, breaking up Newcastle attacks and attempting to restore control in midfield, although Tottenham lacked sufficient creativity around him.

Sandro Tonali: 4/10

A difficult return against his former club. Tonali struggled to impose himself and was involved in the build-up to both Newcastle goals. His substitution was greeted with ironic cheers from the travelling supporters.

Mateus Fernandes: 5/10

Made his first Premier League start for Tottenham. Tried to move the ball forward and delivered some useful set pieces, but his influence diminished as Newcastle took control.

Pedro Porro: 5/10

Moved into a more advanced position and found a few shooting opportunities. Newcastle's defensive work, however, prevented him from making a decisive contribution.

Omar Marmoush: 6/10

Made his Tottenham debut after arriving from Manchester City and showed flashes of his attacking quality. Went close with a first-half effort and produced a clever pass to create an opening for Robertson.

Mathys Tel: 4/10

Had one of Tottenham's better attempts, forcing a good save from Hornicek, but was inconsistent in possession and struggled to maintain his influence.

Substitutes

• Mohammed Kudus - 5/10: Returned from a lengthy injury lay-off but had little opportunity to change the game.
• Mikey Moore - 5/10: Added energy without significantly altering the contest.
• Destiny Udogie - 5/10: Provided fresh legs but Newcastle remained in control.
• Dominic Solanke - 5/10: Came on late and almost helped Spurs pull one back, but Lewis Hall's goal-line intervention denied him.

Lukas Hornicek: 7/10

One of Newcastle's most important performers before half-time. Produced saves to deny Tel, Robertson and van Hecke, including an excellent stop from the latter's header.

Amar Dedic: 7/10

Continued his impressive start to life at Newcastle. His headed knock-down created the opening for Elanga and he defended with increasing confidence.

Malick Thiaw: 6/10

Another solid performance as captain. Had a physical battle with Marmoush and generally dealt well with Tottenham's attacking movement.

Sven Botman: 6/10

Looked increasingly comfortable alongside the Newcastle back line. Helped his side remain organised as Tottenham pushed for a way back into the contest.

Lewis Hall: 7/10

Defensively reliable throughout. Produced an excellent block to prevent Porro from getting a clear shot away and later made a crucial goal-line clearance to preserve Newcastle's clean sheet.

Nico Gonzalez: 8/10

Newcastle's standout debutant. The £52m signing showed composure despite an early booking and produced a superb cross-field pass that launched the move for Elanga's opener.

Lewis Miley: 7/10

Quietly effective in midfield. His ability to retain possession helped Newcastle manage the game once they established their lead.

Anthony Elanga: 7/10

Another confident performance under Jaissle. Elanga showed excellent composure to create space before firing his finish against the post and into the net for his second goal in two matches.

Joe Willock: 5/10

Made less of an impact from the start than he did as a substitute against Liverpool. Contributed defensively but struggled to influence the attacking phase.

Harvey Barnes: 5/10

Could not replicate the attacking impact of his midweek Carabao Cup performance. His decision-making in promising transition situations was inconsistent.

Yoane Wissa: 7/10

Worked hard as Newcastle's central striker and regularly dropped deeper to help his team maintain possession. His acrobatic finish was the highlight of his performance.

• Nick Woltemade - 7/10: Immediately contributed by winning the header that set up Wissa's finish.

Player of the match: Nico Gonzalez

While Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa supplied the goals, Gonzalez's debut deserves particular attention.

The midfielder settled quickly after receiving an early booking and showed the quality that Newcastle invested heavily to acquire. His outstanding long-range pass to Dedic was the key intervention in the move that produced the opening goal.

For a player making his first appearance for the club, it was an encouraging introduction to English football.

The bigger picture

The result provides another significant boost for Matthias Jaissle after Newcastle's dramatic 2-2 draw with Liverpool last weekend.

Newcastle have already shown resilience during a period of considerable change, and the performances of new arrivals such as Gonzalez and Dedic offer further encouragement.

For Tottenham, however, the early warning signs are becoming harder to ignore. They have now lost their opening two league matches, failed to score in either game and have struggled to convert their possession and chances into goals. The contrast between the two clubs' starts could hardly be clearer.
