Amusan wins third African Championships title as Nigeria dominates in Accra

Nigeria’s athletics team enjoyed a commanding outing at the 2026 African Athletics Championships in Accra, with sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan leading the country’s medal surge after winning gold in the women’s 100m hurdles.
The world record holder delivered another composed performance at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, clocking 12.83 seconds to retain her continental crown and secure a third African Championships title in the event.
Amusan’s latest triumph adds to her previous victories in Asaba in 2018 and Mauritius in 2022, further cementing her status as one of Africa’s greatest track athletes.
Nigeria enjoys strong medal haul in Accra
Team Nigeria produced one of the standout performances on Day 2 of the championships, collecting medals across sprint, relay and field events.
In the women’s 100m hurdles final, Adaobi Tabugbo secured bronze after finishing behind Zimbabwe’s Ashley Miller. Tabugbo had earlier battled through her heats to qualify for the final and maintained her form on the big stage.
Nigeria also impressed in the sprint finals:
- Rosemary Chukwuma won silver in the women’s 100m
- Chidera Ezeakor claimed bronze in the men’s 100m
- Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme and Hervé Kole Etame captured the sprint gold medals
The mixed 4x400m relay team also delivered gold for Nigeria. The quartet of Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Sampson and Patience Okon-George crossed the line in 3:16.41, finishing ahead of Botswana and Kenya.
Field events add more medals
Nigeria’s success extended beyond the track as Sade Olatoye earned silver in the women’s hammer throw with a best effort of 69.60m.
In the discus throw events:
- David Oladipo finished with silver
- Obiageri Amaechi claimed bronze in the women’s competition
Amusan reacts after historic win
Following her victory, Amusan expressed gratitude to her supporters while insisting she remains focused on achieving even more success.
“Beyond grateful to God, my team, supporters, and everyone who continues to believe in me through every season. Historic feeling. Still hungry for more. The mission continues.”
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria had named a 45-athlete squad for the championships earlier this month, and the early results suggest Team Nigeria could finish among the competition’s strongest-performing nations.
With the championships continuing through May 17 in Accra, Nigeria will hope to add more medals to an already impressive tally.
