Spain reclaimed football's biggest prize by defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in a tense FIFA World Cup 2026 final at New York New Jersey Stadium.
Ferran Torres emerged as the hero, converting from close range in the 106th minute to hand La Roja their second FIFA World Cup title and their first since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010.

Spain control the contest
Luis de la Fuente's side dictated possession throughout the evening, controlling 65 percent of the ball and constantly forcing Argentina onto the defensive.
Spain finished with 20 attempts on goal, repeatedly testing goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, whose outstanding performance kept Argentina in the contest.
Martinez produced 11 saves, the highest ever recorded by a goalkeeper in a FIFA World Cup final, but could do little to prevent Torres' winner. Argentina, by contrast, struggled to create meaningful opportunities and failed to register a shot on target until the closing minutes of extra time.
Argentina reduced to ten men
Argentina's task became even more difficult moments before the end of normal time. Midfielder Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card after a reckless challenge on Pau Cubarsi, forcing referee Slavko Vincic to dismiss the Chelsea midfielder.
Reduced to ten men for the entirety of extra time, Lionel Scaloni's side found it increasingly difficult to contain Spain's relentless pressure.
Although Argentina pushed forward desperately after conceding, Spain defended resolutely to protect their narrow advantage.
Messi falls short of another World Cup
At 39, Lionel Messi once again carried Argentina into the latter stages of a World Cup, but the captain was unable to inspire another memorable comeback.
Spain's disciplined defensive structure limited the Inter Miami forward's influence for much of the evening. His blocked effort late in extra time represented Argentina's clearest opportunity, but it arrived too late to alter the outcome.
