Serena Williams accepts Wimbledon singles wild card

Serena Williams has taken another remarkable step in her comeback by accepting a Wimbledon singles wild card, setting up her first Grand Slam singles appearance in nearly four years.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion, now 44, had initially suggested that a singles return was unlikely because she wanted more time to prepare physically. However, following weeks of training and competitive doubles appearances, Williams has decided to test herself once again on tennis' biggest stage.

The decision means she will compete in both the singles and doubles events at the All England Club, where she is also scheduled to partner her sister Venus Williams.

First singles match since the 2022 US Open

Williams has not played a singles match since the 2022 US Open, where she exited in the third round against Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic in what many believed would be the final singles match of her legendary career.

Her comeback began earlier this month at Queen's Club alongside Victoria Mboko, where the pair secured an impressive opening victory before Mboko suffered a knee injury that prematurely ended their campaign.

Williams later partnered Karolina Muchova in Berlin, although they were eliminated in the opening round. Those appearances provided valuable match fitness ahead of Wimbledon, even if they also highlighted the challenge of returning after such a lengthy absence.

Wimbledon singles presents a different challenge

Competing in singles represents a much greater physical examination than doubles. Covering the entire court over potentially long three-set matches will test Williams' movement, endurance and match sharpness against opponents who have remained active on the WTA Tour.

Despite those questions, Williams has never lacked confidence throughout her career.

Speaking during her comeback preparations, she admitted she still believed she could compete against the modern generation but stressed she would only return when she felt ready. That confidence now appears to have convinced her to accept Wimbledon’s invitation.

Inspiration came from fellow sporting icons

Williams revealed that watching other elite athletes continue competing later in their careers played an important role in her decision. She cited her sister Venus Williams' performances during the previous season as one source of motivation, while American skiing legend Lindsey Vonn's comeback also encouraged her to believe another chapter was possible.

Rather than viewing age as a barrier, Williams has embraced the opportunity to challenge herself once more on one of tennis' most famous courts.

Can Serena make another Wimbledon run?

Expectations should remain realistic. Williams has not played singles competitively for several years, while today's women's game features younger, faster and more physically demanding opponents than during the peak of her career.

However, her experience, serving ability and mental resilience still make her a dangerous opponent, particularly on grass — the surface where she has won seven Wimbledon singles titles.

Even if another championship remains an ambitious target, her presence immediately becomes one of the biggest attractions of the tournament.

A historic return

Very few athletes have successfully returned to elite competition after stepping away for several seasons.

Whether Williams can make another memorable Wimbledon run remains to be seen, but her decision guarantees that one of tennis' greatest champions will once again walk onto Centre Court, adding another unforgettable chapter to one of the sport's most celebrated careers.
