Senegal sack Pape Thiaw after 2026 FIFA World Cup exit

Senegal have dismissed head coach Pape Thiaw after the Teranga Lions' disappointing run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing an end to his tenure less than two years after taking charge of the national team.

The decision was confirmed by the Senegal Football Federation (FSF), which stated that it had reviewed the team's recent performances and concluded that a managerial change was necessary as part of its plans for the future.

The move comes just days after Senegal suffered a heartbreaking Round of 32 exit, despite holding a two-goal advantage against Belgium.

World Cup exit seals Thiaw's fate

Senegal entered the knockout stage after recovering from a difficult start to the tournament.

Defeats to France and Norway in their opening two group matches left qualification hanging by a thread, but an emphatic 5-0 victory over Iraq secured enough points to advance as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams.

Their reward was a Round of 32 meeting with Belgium. The Teranga Lions appeared firmly in control after establishing a 2-0 lead before a stunning Belgian comeback changed the course of the match. Belgium scored twice late in regulation before converting a decisive penalty during extra time to complete a dramatic 3-2 victory.

The defeat ended Senegal's World Cup journey and intensified pressure on Thiaw's position.

Federation points to long-term sporting objectives

In announcing the dismissal, the FSF explained that the decision followed an extensive assessment of the national team's sporting direction. According to the federation, the coaching change was made with the objective of strengthening Senegal's long-term competitiveness at major international tournaments, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and qualification for future FIFA competitions.

The federation has not yet announced an interim coach or a timetable for appointing Thiaw's successor.

Dressing room concerns emerged after elimination

The World Cup exit was followed by signs of unrest within the squad. Midfielder Pape Gueye publicly stated that he intended to step away from international football while the existing coaching staff remained in charge, comments that fueled speculation about internal tensions after the tournament.

Although the federation did not directly reference player dissatisfaction in its announcement, the timing of Thiaw's dismissal suggests the World Cup campaign accelerated discussions over the team's leadership.

AFCON appeal still ongoing

Thiaw's spell in charge was also overshadowed by one of African football's biggest recent controversies.

Senegal initially celebrated winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Morocco in the final. However, the match became the subject of disciplinary proceedings after Thiaw led his players off the pitch following a controversial stoppage-time penalty awarded to Morocco.

Play resumed after a lengthy delay, with Senegal eventually securing victory in extra time. Months later, the Confederation of African Football overturned the result, awarding the title to Morocco following its disciplinary review.

Senegal subsequently lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, where the case remains unresolved.

What comes next for Senegal?

The federation now faces an important decision as it prepares for the next phase of the national team's development. Despite the disappointment of the World Cup, Senegal continue to possess one of Africa's strongest player pools, blending experienced internationals with emerging talent capable of competing at the highest level.

Finding a manager capable of restoring confidence while maintaining the country's status among the continent's elite will be one of the federation's biggest priorities in the months ahead.

The next appointment could prove crucial as Senegal aim to challenge once again for continental honours while building toward the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
