Roberto Martinez resigns as Portugal Manager following World Cup exit to Spain

Roberto Martinez has officially stepped down as Portugal national team manager following the country's Round of 16 exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing an end to his three-year tenure in charge of the European giants.
The announcement came shortly after Portugal suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Spain, with Mikel Merino's stoppage-time winner ending both Portugal's tournament and Cristiano Ronaldo's final World Cup appearance.
Martinez confirmed that his contract had expired and insisted it was the appropriate moment for Portuguese football to begin a new chapter.
Martinez confirms immediate departure
Speaking after Portugal's elimination, the Spanish coach revealed that his mission had always been to guide Portugal to World Cup glory.
Without achieving that objective, he felt continuing in the role was no longer justified.
"I came to Portugal to win the World Cup, and I think that without winning, it doesn't make sense to continue."
Martinez added that the Portuguese Football Federation would now have the opportunity to appoint a new manager as his contract had reached its conclusion.
Defends Portugal's tournament
Despite criticism surrounding Portugal's tactical approach against Spain, particularly the decision to keep 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch throughout the match, Martinez rejected suggestions that the campaign should be viewed as a failure.
Instead, he praised his players for their commitment and competitiveness.
"We didn't fail. We lost against one of the favourites. We competed face-to-face and showed incredible talent."
He also reminded supporters that Portugal captured the UEFA Nations League title during his tenure and argued that the margins separating elite international teams are often extremely small.
"Failing is not trying to win. We fought until the final minute."
A successful yet incomplete era
Martinez took charge of Portugal in 2023 following the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. During his spell, he transformed Portugal into one of Europe's most consistent international sides while overseeing the emergence of several younger talents alongside experienced stars.
His record includes:
- 45 matches managed
- 32 victories
- UEFA Nations League title
- Qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup
- Round of 16 finish at the World Cup
Although Portugal consistently ranked among the favourites under his leadership, the team ultimately fell short of ending their long wait for World Cup success.
Attention turns to Portugal's future
Martinez's resignation leaves the Portuguese Football Federation searching for a new head coach ahead of the next international cycle. The new manager will inherit one of football's most talented squads, featuring a blend of established stars and exciting young players.
His appointment will also mark the beginning of Portugal's first major era without Cristiano Ronaldo at a World Cup, following the legendary captain's final appearance on football's biggest stage.
For Martinez, the departure closes a chapter that delivered silverware but ultimately fell short of the nation's biggest ambition.
