PSG beat Lens to win fifth straight Ligue 1 title

Paris Saint-Germain have officially secured a fifth consecutive Ligue 1 title after defeating closest challengers Lens 2-0 in a tense showdown at Parc des Princes.

The result confirmed PSG as champions with one game remaining, extending their lead at the top of the table to nine points and further cementing their dominance in French football.

Goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and teenage forward Ibrahim Mbaye ensured the title remained in Paris after another dramatic night in Ligue 1.

Kvaratskhelia delivers again for PSG

Kvaratskhelia continued his outstanding form since arriving in Paris with the breakthrough goal midway through the first half. The move began after Ousmane Dembélé intercepted a misplaced pass from Lens defender Malang Sarr before quickly releasing the Georgian winger into space.

Kvaratskhelia remained composed and finished clinically to hand PSG the advantage in the 29th minute. The goal once again highlighted the winger’s growing importance to Luis Enrique’s attacking system during the closing months of the campaign.

Lens push PSG but fail to capitalise

Despite the defeat, Lens produced a spirited performance and created several opportunities that could have changed the outcome of the match.

Striker Wesley Saïd squandered two major chances before half-time, first misjudging a close-range header before later firing directly at goalkeeper Matvei Safonov.

Safonov proved decisive throughout the contest.

The PSG goalkeeper denied Abdallah Sima early in the second half after the forward broke through on goal, before later watching Sima strike the post following an excellent pass from Florian Thauvin.

Lens manager Pierre Sage initially left both Thauvin and Allan Saint-Maximin on the bench as the club also prepares for the upcoming French Cup final against OGC Nice. Their introductions improved Lens offensively, but the visitors ultimately failed to convert their momentum into goals.

Teenager Mbaye seals historic triumph

With Lens pushing forward late in the match, PSG eventually sealed the result in stoppage time.

Eighteen-year-old forward Ibrahim Mbaye produced a composed finish after receiving a pass from Désiré Doué, smashing his effort in off the crossbar to spark celebrations around Parc des Princes.

The goal underlined PSG’s growing blend of elite experience and emerging young talent, a balance that has become central to the club’s long-term project under Luis Enrique.

Luis Enrique continues PSG dynasty

The title marks another milestone for Luis Enrique, who has now guided PSG to three Ligue 1 crowns since taking charge in 2023. It also extends PSG’s record as France’s most successful club with a 14th domestic league title overall.

Speaking after the match, Luis Enrique acknowledged Lens’ quality while praising Safonov’s decisive contribution.

“Without a doubt this was difficult. Lens did so well this season,” he said. “I think they deserved more tonight but Safonov was incredible.

PSG’s domestic dominance now places the club in position to chase another historic treble.

Having already secured the Ligue 1 title and French Super Cup, attention will now shift toward the UEFA Champions League final against Arsenal in Budapest on May 30.

PSG eye European glory

While PSG have become almost unstoppable domestically, European success remains the club’s ultimate objective. The Ligue 1 title was effectively expected, but winning the Champions League would represent the defining achievement of the Luis Enrique era.

The French league’s decision to reschedule the original fixture date to assist PSG’s European preparations sparked controversy earlier in the season, particularly from Lens.

Now, PSG will hope the additional recovery time proves worthwhile as they prepare for one of the biggest matches in club history. For Lens, meanwhile, focus quickly turns toward the French Cup final and securing silverware after an impressive domestic campaign.
