PSG beat Aston Villa 2-1 to win UEFA Super Cup 2026
Paris Saint-Germain began the 2026-27 season with silverware after defeating Aston Villa 2-1 in the UEFA Super Cup at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg.
European champions PSG were pushed hard by Unai Emery’s side before Desire Doue struck the decisive goal in the second half to secure victory.
The night also belonged to Aston Villa teenager Brian Madjo, who became the youngest goalscorer in UEFA Super Cup history when he scored on his professional debut at just 17 years old.
Kvaratskhelia opens the scoring
PSG made the breakthrough in the 20th minute through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The Georgian winger cut inside from the left flank, shifted the ball onto his stronger foot and beat goalkeeper Marco Bizot with a precise finish into the far corner.
The goal rewarded PSG’s bright start and appeared to put Luis Enrique’s side in control of the contest.
Madjo announces himself on the big stage
Villa, however, responded impressively. Madjo had already threatened with several efforts before finally finding the net just before half-time.
The teenager shrugged off the challenge of Willian Pacho and volleyed beyond Matvey Safonov to level the score at 1-1, becoming the youngest player ever to score in the competition.
Remarkably, Madjo could have had an even bigger night. He missed three other promising opportunities during a fearless first-half display against one of Europe’s strongest defences.
Doue delivers the winner
PSG regained the lead in the 62nd minute. Desire Doue timed his run perfectly to break behind the Villa defence before calmly finishing past Bizot to restore the French champions’ advantage.
Villa nearly responded immediately when fellow teenager George Hemmings found space inside the penalty area, but Safonov produced an excellent save to preserve PSG’s lead.
Emery praises youngsters after defeat
Aston Villa were missing several key players, including Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa and Emiliano Martinez, who remain on extended post-World Cup breaks. Their absence opened the door for younger players, and both Madjo and Hemmings seized the opportunity with impressive performances.
