Dodgers blank Padres 3-0 as Yamamoto extends San Diego's losing streak

The Los Angeles Dodgers strengthened their grip on the National League West after defeating the San Diego Padres 3-0, with Yoshinobu Yamamoto producing a commanding performance on the mound.

The Japanese ace pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing only three hits while neutralizing a Padres lineup that struggled to generate any sustained offense. The victory extended San Diego's losing streak to eight games, leaving their postseason ambitions hanging by a thread.

Yamamoto in complete control

Yamamoto looked composed from the opening inning, mixing his fastball and breaking pitches effectively to keep Padres hitters off balance. Across seven innings, he surrendered just three singles without allowing a run, handing the game over to the Dodgers' bullpen after another efficient outing.

Three Los Angeles relievers combined to complete the shutout, preserving one of the club's most convincing pitching performances of the season.

Dodgers strike early

San Diego experimented with an opener, using Wandy Peralta before turning to Griffin Canning, but the Dodgers found the breakthrough in the third inning.

Dalton Rushing worked a walk before Alex Freeland singled to put runners aboard. Andy Pages then delivered the game's opening run with an RBI single that gave Los Angeles a lead it would never surrender.

Freddie Freeman provides the power

Veteran first baseman Freddie Freeman supplied the insurance runs that put the contest beyond San Diego's reach.

Freeman launched a solo home run in the sixth inning to double the Dodgers' advantage before later adding an RBI against hard-throwing reliever Mason Miller. The final score of 3-0 reflected the Dodgers' efficiency at the plate despite not producing a high volume of hits.

Padres offense continues to struggle

San Diego once again found scoring opportunities difficult to create. Fernando Tatis Jr. was the lone bright spot, collecting two of the team's four hits. Xander Bogaerts and Gavin Sheets also recorded singles, while catcher Luis Campusano made his return from the injured list.

However, the Padres failed to produce extra-base hits or mount any serious threat against Yamamoto and the Dodgers bullpen.

Playoff race becoming increasingly difficult

The defeat leaves San Diego at 43-45 and further complicates its push for a postseason berth.

Arizona's victory over Milwaukee allowed the Diamondbacks to move ahead of the Padres in the National League West standings, while the Dodgers continue to pull away at the top of the division.

San Diego also slipped further behind in the National League Wild Card race, with several teams now standing between the Padres and a playoff position.

With the All-Star break approaching, the Padres urgently need to reverse their form. Their upcoming series against the Arizona Diamondbacks presents an opportunity to regain ground against a direct postseason rival.

However, inconsistent pitching depth and a prolonged offensive slump continue to raise concerns as San Diego searches for answers during one of its most difficult stretches of the season.
