Nottingham Forest agree £50m deal for Chelsea's Liam Delap
Nottingham Forest are closing in on the signing of Liam Delap from Chelsea after agreeing a fee understood to be worth around £50 million for the 23-year-old striker.
Delap is expected to undergo a medical and sign a long-term contract with Forest this week, in a move that would make him the most expensive player in the club's history. The proposed transfer comes only 12 months after Delap moved to Chelsea from Ipswich Town for £30 million.
Forest turn to Delap after difficult start
Forest have identified attacking reinforcements as a priority after beginning their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 home defeat against Leeds United. Chris Wood and Igor Jesus both failed to score in the opening fixture, increasing the need for additional competition in the forward line.
Delap would give manager Oliver Glasner another option at centre-forward while also providing competition for Wood and Jesus. His arrival would also represent a significant investment from Forest, who have already strengthened their squad with the £34 million signing of Sporting defender Ousmane Diomande.
Why Chelsea are willing to sell
Delap's proposed departure represents a sharp change in circumstances from his arrival at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea beat competition from Manchester United and Everton to sign the striker from Ipswich last summer, but his first season at the club failed to produce the expected impact.
Delap scored only once in the Premier League during a campaign affected by shoulder and hamstring injuries.
Chelsea have also added attacking options this summer, signing Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg and Danny Welbeck from Brighton, further increasing competition for places. The club's willingness to sanction a sizeable sale therefore reflects both Delap's inconsistent first season and the changing composition of the squad.
From Manchester City prospect to Premier League striker
Delap began his youth career at Derby County before joining Manchester City's academy in 2019. He quickly established himself as one of the club's most promising young forwards, scoring 24 goals in 20 Premier League 2 appearances during the 2020-21 season as City won the competition.
He made his senior City debut in September 2020, scoring against Bournemouth in the League Cup before making his Premier League debut against Leicester City three days later.
However, injuries restricted his opportunities with City's first team. Loan spells at Stoke City, Preston North End and Hull City followed between 2022 and 2024, giving the striker valuable experience in the Championship.
Delap's Ipswich breakthrough
The forward eventually left Manchester City permanently in the summer of 2024 when Ipswich paid around £20 million for his services. The move proved to be an important step in his development.
Delap scored 12 goals in 37 Premier League appearances for Ipswich during their return to the top flight, attracting interest from several clubs before Chelsea eventually won the race for his signature.
His proposed move to Forest would now give him another opportunity to establish himself as a leading Premier League striker.
Forest's changing squad
Forest have been active in the transfer market as they look to build a squad capable of competing higher up the Premier League table. The club sold England midfielder Elliot Anderson to Manchester City for a reported club-record £116 million, while striker Taiwo Awoniyi has joined Coventry City for £9 million.
Alongside Diomande, Forest have also brought in Austrian midfielder Xaver Schlager and goalkeeper Steve Benda as free agents. Delap would become the headline addition of the summer so far, and potentially the most important given Forest's need for goals.
If the medical and final contractual details are completed as expected, the 23-year-old will arrive at the City Ground with considerable pressure attached to a £50 million price tag.
For Forest, the hope will be that the striker can rediscover the form that made him one of England's most highly regarded young forwards at Ipswich.
