Newcastle United suffered a 3-1 pre-season defeat to Everton at Murrayfield, with new head coach Matthias Jaissle acknowledging that his squad still needs reinforcements before the Premier League season begins.

Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle has admitted his side still has work to do after a 3-1 pre-season defeat to Everton at Murrayfield.

The result provided a timely warning for Newcastle less than two weeks before the new Premier League campaign gets underway, with Jaissle also acknowledging that the club's transfer plans remain unfinished.

The German coach is overseeing a significantly changed Newcastle squad following a summer of departures and arrivals. He said the club is aware of the areas that require improvement and will continue assessing its options before the transfer window closes.

"You all see the matches. You are also smart enough to see the needs in the squad," Jaissle said.

"We are aware of what we need. Let's see now. There is still some time."

Toure impresses but Newcastle struggle defensively

Newcastle made a lively start at Murrayfield, with new signing Bazoumana Toure once again showing his pace and attacking ability on the left.

However, the visitors were unable to turn their early opportunities into goals and gradually became more vulnerable defensively.

Everton opened the scoring in the 27th minute after James Tarkowski's long ball created problems for Newcastle's defence. Thierno Barry got ahead of Sven Botman before Lewis Hall's recovery challenge only diverted the ball into the path of Harrison Armstrong.

Armstrong then picked out Barry, who calmly finished from inside the penalty area.

Newcastle's problems worsened shortly afterwards when Everton were awarded a penalty after Joelinton was judged to have fouled Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Iliman Ndiaye converted from the spot to give Everton a 2-0 advantage.

Tyrique George added a third in the 73rd minute with a powerful low finish, leaving Newcastle facing a heavy defeat.

Harvey Barnes eventually pulled one back for Newcastle after finishing at the back post from Jacob Murphy's cross.

Young Newcastle squad exposed

The match offered Jaissle an opportunity to assess a youthful Newcastle side, with eight of his starters aged 25 or younger.

Joelinton and Yoane Wissa, both 29, were the oldest players in the starting XI by a significant margin.

Newcastle are still waiting for several experienced players to return, including Dan Burn, Lewis Miley and Tino Livramento.

"It's a really young team at the moment so there are vacuums where players need to step up," he said.

The defeat has reinforced the need for Newcastle to strengthen before the transfer window closes on September 1.

"Usually it takes time to adapt to the Premier League."

Jaissle remains positive despite Everton defeat

Despite the setback, Jaissle insisted Newcastle remain focused on moving in the right direction.

The defeat followed a 2-1 victory over Valencia in his first friendly, giving the new manager further information about the squad he inherited.

Newcastle still have additional pre-season fixtures before Liverpool visit St James' Park in their opening Premier League fixture.

For Jaissle, the immediate priority is clear: improve the squad, integrate the returning players and address the weaknesses exposed against Everton.

"We have these goals and there's many stones along the way thrown in that path, but we need to get rid of them," he said.

The Everton defeat therefore represents more than just a pre-season setback. For Newcastle's new manager, it was another indication that significant work remains before his side is ready for the demands of the new Premier League season.
