NBA roundup: Davis makes history in Lakers win over Timberwolves

On the eve of his 31st birthday, Anthony Davis showcased an extraordinary performance, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a resounding 120-109 victory over the Western Conference high-fliers, Minnesota. Davis impressively contributed 27 points and an astounding 25 rebounds during the NBA game.

Davis contributed significantly to the Lakers' victory, recording five assists, an impressive seven steals, and three blocked shots. The Lakers are currently engaged in a fierce competition for a play-in berth.

On the other hand, the Timberwolves, who were previously ranked second in the Western Conference, slipped to third place, trailing the conference leaders, the Oklahoma City Thunder, by one and a half games.

Speaking of the Thunder, they dominated the Memphis Grizzlies with a score of 124-93 in their home court of Oklahoma City. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 23 points, while rookie Cason Wallace added 23 points coming off the bench. This victory marked the Thunder's third consecutive win.

Unfortunately, there was some unfortunate news for the Oklahoma City Thunder as Jalen Williams had to exit the game in the second quarter due to a sprained right ankle.

The Houston Rockets also faced injury troubles despite their comeback from a 13-point deficit to defeat the Kings 112-104 in Sacramento. Their leading scorer, Alperen Sengun, had to leave the court in a wheelchair after an awkward fall while challenging Domantas Sabonis under the basket in the final minute.

Rockets coach Ime Udoka revealed that Sengun was undergoing X-rays on his right knee and was scheduled for an MRI exam on both his right knee and ankle on Monday. Sengun, from Turkey, has been performing exceptionally well this season, averaging a career-high 21.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.

Udoka expressed his disappointment at the injury, particularly considering its timing in the late stages of the game. However, he emphasized that the win itself was still significant and regarded it as one of their best road victories. Sengun played a crucial role in the team's success.

In the game between the Lakers and the Timberwolves, Los Angeles took advantage of the Timberwolves' depleted lineup. Notably, Karl-Anthony Towns was sidelined indefinitely after knee surgery, and center Rudy Gobert was absent due to a tight hamstring.

Despite the absence of key players, Davis acknowledged the Timberwolves as a formidable team. He made history by becoming the first NBA player to achieve at least 25 points, 25 rebounds, and five steals in a single game. The Lakers aimed to establish defensive dominance in the second half, which they successfully accomplished.

Davis grabbed 21 rebounds in the latter half, while LeBron James contributed 21 of his 29 points post halftime to assist the Lakers in securing a victory in a closely contested match.

Naz Reid and Anthony Edwards each scored 25 points for the Timberwolves, who managed to sink 16 three-pointers but were outscored 29-17 in the final quarter.

The action at http://Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles commenced on Sunday with the Milwaukee Bucks claiming a 124-117 win over the Clippers.

Damian Lillard tallied 35 points and Giannis Antetokounmpo added 34 for Milwaukee, who had suffered defeats against Golden State and the Lakers at the start of their California road trip.

Lillard emphasized the importance of the victory, stating, "It was extremely crucial," as the Bucks look to continue their success with a game against Sacramento on Tuesday.

In a closely contested match with 28 lead changes, Lillard's 16 points in the fourth quarter helped the Bucks secure a late win against a Clippers team missing Kawhi Leonard and Paul George.

Both Leonard and George were rested due to minor injuries, as the Clippers played a game less than 24 hours after their victory over Chicago on Saturday.

Elsewhere, the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the New York Knicks 79-73 at Madison Square Garden, limiting the Knicks to the lowest points total in the NBA this season.

Kelly Oubre Jr recorded 18 points and secured 10 rebounds for the 76ers, as they patiently anticipate the return of NBA Most Valuable Player Joel Embiid following knee surgery. All-Star Tyrese Maxey was absent for his fourth game due to a concussion.

Amidst a season marked by a surge in scoring, this match marked the first time since 2016 that both teams scored less than 80 points. Furthermore, it occurred within two months of Embiid's impressive 70-point performance in a win against the San Antonio Spurs.
