Manchester United secure land for new 100,000-seater stadium

Manchester United have reached one of the biggest milestones in the club's ambitious stadium redevelopment plans after securing most of the land required to construct their proposed 100,000-capacity home.
The acquisition represents significant progress in a project that aims to deliver not only Britain's largest football stadium but also one of Europe's most modern sporting and entertainment venues.
Located roughly 350 metres northwest of the current Old Trafford stadium, the newly acquired 25-acre site provides the foundation for United's long-term vision of creating a world-class football destination while maintaining close ties to the club's historic home.
Land acquisition moves project into next phase
The land was purchased from industrial property developer Indurent, part of the Blackstone portfolio, allowing Manchester United to move beyond conceptual planning and into the next stage of development.
Club officials confirmed they will work closely with businesses currently operating on the site to ensure a smooth transition as redevelopment progresses.
While construction timelines have yet to be announced, securing the land removes one of the project's biggest logistical hurdles.
Stadium designed around supporters
Manchester United insist the new venue will be built with supporters at the centre of every major decision. Chief Executive of Manchester United's New Stadium Development, Collette Roche, explained that preserving the traditions associated with Old Trafford remains a priority despite the move to a new location.
The club says atmosphere, affordability and accessibility will be central design principles, ensuring the stadium reflects the identity of Manchester United while embracing modern infrastructure.
Being located only a short distance from Old Trafford is also expected to help preserve long-standing matchday traditions for generations of supporters.
Wider Old Trafford regeneration set to transform the area
The stadium is only one component of a much larger regeneration programme covering approximately 370 acres around Old Trafford. Working alongside Trafford Council and the Old Trafford Regeneration Mayoral Development Corporation (OTRMDC), the wider development is expected to deliver:
- Around 15,000 new homes, including affordable housing
- Approximately 48,000 local jobs
- More than 90,000 jobs nationwide
- An estimated annual contribution exceeding £7 billion to the UK economy
The project aims to transform the area into one of Europe's leading sports, business and entertainment districts while creating long-term economic opportunities for Greater Manchester.
Consultation process set to begin
The Old Trafford Regeneration Mayoral Development Corporation is expected to publish its detailed vision for the redevelopment programme in early July.
That announcement will include updated stadium site plans and launch a formal public consultation process, allowing residents, supporters and local stakeholders to provide feedback before major construction decisions are finalised.
The consultation will help shape transport links, public spaces and surrounding infrastructure alongside the stadium itself.
A generational investment for Manchester United
Beyond football, the new stadium project represents one of the largest infrastructure investments ever associated with an English football club.
Manchester United view the development as a long-term investment designed to strengthen the club's commercial position while modernising facilities capable of hosting major sporting events, concerts and international entertainment.
Although Old Trafford remains one of football's most iconic venues, club executives believe the proposed stadium will secure Manchester United's future for decades while honouring the heritage that made the Theatre of Dreams famous worldwide.
With land acquisition now largely complete, the focus shifts toward planning approvals, supporter consultation and bringing one of football's most ambitious stadium projects closer to reality.
