Manchester City 5-0 Norwich: Samba stars in emphatic Carabao Cup win

Manchester City cruised into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a commanding 5-0 victory over Norwich City, with 17-year-old Floyd Samba stealing the spotlight on his first-team debut.

City took 25 minutes to find their rhythm at the Etihad Stadium, but once they clicked into gear, the difference between the two sides became increasingly clear.

Samba opened the scoring in the 29th minute before Rayan Cherki doubled the advantage three minutes later. Allan added City's third shortly after half-time, Samba completed his brace in the 54th minute and Ryan McAidoo added a fifth in the 90th minute.

The result gave new manager Enzo Maresca another convincing victory and sent City through to the fourth round.

Samba announces himself with debut double

The biggest story of the night was undoubtedly Samba's performance.

The 17-year-old was handed his first senior appearance after an impressive campaign with Manchester City's under-18s and repaid Maresca's faith with two goals across a full 90-minute performance.

Samba had scored 24 goals and supplied 10 assists in his first full season with City's under-18s last term. His campaign also included a memorable free-kick in the FA Youth Cup final victory over Manchester United in May.

Despite being deployed as a centre-forward against Norwich, Samba admitted he had never played the position before.

"I knew there would be an opportunity to get some minutes for the first time with the first team," Samba told BBC Radio 5 Live. "To get a debut like that is mind-blowing."

He added: "I couldn't believe it myself - but that is just the beginning, I have got a big career ahead of me. It was a great debut."

His first goal came after he flicked a header beyond the Norwich defence, before he produced another composed finish for his second.

Samba was later named man of the match and received a strong ovation from the Etihad crowd.

Maresca impressed by teenage forward

Maresca was pleased with more than just Samba's goals and highlighted the youngster's overall contribution.

"I'm satisfied not just for the goals but for the performance too," said the City manager.

Maresca explained that he had discussed the centre-forward role with Samba before deciding to use him there.

"I asked him in the last three, four days - when I decided to play him as nine - he said he never played there," Maresca said.

"He is not a nine for sure, but he was good. He is young, full of energy, strong, can finish, can set [players] up. He made some good decisions in the first half."

Maresca also stressed the need to manage Samba's development carefully.

"I am happy but they are young and we have to go slowly, slowly. Hopefully we can give him more chances."

Samba's Manchester City journey continues

Samba joined City's academy at under-nine level and has now taken his first significant step into senior football.

His debut also carries a family connection. His father, Christopher Samba, was a Premier League defender for Blackburn Rovers and Queens Park Rangers, while his brother Tyrone is also part of Manchester City's youth set-up.

Floyd's playing style is markedly different from that of his father. Christopher was a towering, physical centre-back, whereas his son is a fleet-footed forward.

The youngster acknowledged the demands of stepping up from youth football to senior training.

"Coming from under-21s to first-team training, that is a big jump," Samba said. "The sessions are more tiring, you have to run more - they demand more of you and you have to cope with it."

Former Norwich striker Chris Sutton praised the teenager's performance and suggested the display could give Maresca greater confidence in using him.

"Absolutely brilliant moment for Floyd. His dad was in the stadium and will be extremely proud," Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"He has given Enzo Maresca a bit of food for thought moving forward. Of course, he is not going to play ahead of Erling Haaland but it is a great evening for him and good for his development."

City take control after slow start

Norwich managed to keep City at bay during the early stages, but the hosts eventually found a breakthrough through Samba in the 29th minute.

Cherki then made it 2-0 just three minutes later with a composed finish, while his close control and attacking creativity were particularly noticeable during the first half.

Allan extended City's lead three minutes after the interval with a superb finish and also supplied an assist on his debut.

Samba then struck again in the 54th minute to complete his brace before McAidoo rounded off the scoring in the final minute of normal time.

Rayan Ait-Nouri also contributed two assists, while City's midfield controlled the game as the evening progressed.

Gerónimo Rulli — 6/10

Rulli had very little to do during the match but enjoyed the significant moment of making his first appearance for Manchester City.

A tidy and disciplined performance from Lewis, who handled his responsibilities without fuss.

Khusanov looked comfortable back in his familiar defensive position and defended well throughout.

Vitor Reis — 7.5/10

Calm and composed in possession, Reis produced a mature performance and looked assured both with and without the ball.

Nico O'Reilly — 7.5/10

O'Reilly provided a consistent threat from the left, with his runs behind the Norwich defence causing problems throughout the game.

Ayyoub Bouaddi — 8.5/10

Bouaddi was one of City's standout performers. His elegance in possession was matched by his positional awareness when City did not have the ball.

Mateo Kovacic — 7.5/10

Kovacic provided stability in midfield and produced a solid performance from start to finish.

Floyd Samba — 9.5/10

A dream first-team debut. Samba scored twice, showed quality with his touches and looked confident despite being deployed in an unfamiliar central role.

Allan enjoyed an excellent debut, scoring a superb goal and providing an assist. His performance offered plenty of encouragement for what he could bring to City's attack.

Ait-Nouri registered two assists and delivered the kind of steady attacking performance that should provide a boost to his confidence.

Cherki scored City's second goal and added plenty of creativity, with his close control, tricks and flicks particularly effective during the opening half.

McAidoo showed flashes of quality after coming on and capped his appearance with a composed late goal.

Kaden Braithwaite — 6.5/10

Braithwaite gained valuable first-team minutes at left-back and produced a mistake-free performance.

A memorable night for City's academy

While the 5-0 scoreline confirmed City's progression in the Carabao Cup, Samba's emergence provided an additional reason for Maresca and the club to be encouraged.

The teenager has spent years developing within City's academy and made the most of his opportunity when it finally arrived.

His two goals, full-match performance and man-of-the-match recognition ensured his first senior appearance became a night to remember.

For City, the focus now turns to the next stage of the Carabao Cup, while Samba will hope his impressive debut earns him further opportunities with the first team.
