Man Utd 0-2 Hull City: United stunned in Premier League opener

Manchester United's latest attempt to begin a Premier League campaign on a positive note ended in a nightmare as newly promoted Hull City stunned them 2-0 at the KC Stadium.
Two goals from set pieces condemned United to defeat, with Semi Ajayi opening the scoring after 17 minutes before Nobel Mendy doubled Hull's advantage shortly before half-time.
For Michael Carrick, it was a particularly disappointing start to his first Premier League match as Manchester United's permanent head coach. United improved after the break and introduced Marcus Rashford at half-time, but the England forward could not produce the spark required to rescue his side.
More concerning for Carrick was how familiar United's problems looked. Both Hull goals came from deliveries into the penalty area, exposing weaknesses in defending dead-ball situations that the new manager will need to address quickly.
Hull City 2-0 Manchester United: How the game was won
Hull did not need sustained dominance to produce one of the biggest opening-day surprises. Instead, they were ruthless when opportunities arrived.
Ajayi punishes United from a corner
Hull took the lead in the 17th minute when Semi Ajayi powered home from a corner, immediately putting United under pressure. The goal was particularly frustrating for Carrick because it came from a situation his side should have been prepared to defend.
United were unable to deal with the delivery and Ajayi took advantage. For a newly promoted team facing one of English football's biggest clubs, an early goal provided exactly the platform Hull needed.
Mendy doubles Hull's lead
United's problems at set pieces returned before half-time. With eight minutes remaining in the opening period, Nobel Mendy rose to head Hull's second goal, leaving United facing a two-goal deficit.
The free kick that created the opportunity came from Regan Slater, who played a significant role in Hull's excellent opening half. Two set-piece goals meant Hull went into the break with a commanding advantage and United with plenty of questions to answer.
Rashford's return cannot rescue United
There had been plenty of attention surrounding Marcus Rashford before kick-off after United confirmed his new squad number. Rashford will wear the No. 9 shirt this season following his return from a loan spell at Barcelona.
However, the forward began on the bench before entering at half-time. His introduction offered United an additional attacking threat, but Hull had already established enough control to make the comeback extremely difficult.
Rashford, like much of the United side, struggled to produce the decisive moment that could have changed the match. The problem was not simply the absence of one attacking player. United lacked the collective sharpness required to break down a Hull side defending a two-goal lead.
Carrick's first league game ends in defeat
The defeat represents an uncomfortable opening chapter in Carrick's tenure as United's permanent manager. The former United midfielder will know that one result cannot define an entire season, but the manner of the defeat will concern him more than the scoreline itself.
United conceded twice from set pieces and were unable to find a response despite having 45 minutes to change the outcome. Carrick acknowledged afterwards that his team still had room for improvement.
"We have a bit to improve on - it was never going to be perfect," Carrick said.
He also stressed that one match should not determine the direction of the club.
"One game doesn't change the direction of everything. It doesn't change the direction of the football club."
That patience will be tested quickly.
Hull deliver the perfect promotion statement
For Hull, the evening could hardly have gone better. The Tigers were not expected to dominate the Premier League after securing promotion, particularly after finishing sixth in the Championship last season.
Their route back to the top flight was unusual, with Hull taking advantage of the disruption surrounding the Championship play-offs before securing promotion at Wembley.
There were understandable questions about whether Sergej Jakirovic's team could immediately compete at Premier League level. Their opening performance provided an emphatic answer.
Hull defended their lead, maintained their discipline and took advantage of one of United's biggest weaknesses. Regan Slater summed up the atmosphere around the club afterwards.
"It's massive -- you can see what it means to everyone."
The result gives Hull three valuable points and, perhaps more importantly, belief that they can compete against established Premier League opposition.
United's set-piece problem is the biggest concern
There will be plenty of discussion about United's attacking performance, Rashford's introduction and individual displays. But the biggest tactical concern from this match may be defending set pieces.
Conceding once from a corner can happen. Conceding twice from deliveries into the box in the same match suggests something more fundamental. Hull recognised an opportunity and repeatedly put pressure on United in an area where they struggled to respond.
For Carrick, the immediate task is therefore not simply finding more goals. It is making United harder to beat. A team hoping to challenge near the top of the Premier League cannot afford to give newly promoted opposition two opportunities from dead-ball situations and then fail to respond at the other end.
What this means for Manchester United
It would be premature to make sweeping conclusions about United's entire season after one match. However, the opening-day defeat has immediately increased pressure on Carrick to find solutions.
United's next league fixture is against Ipswich Town, another newly promoted side. That makes the upcoming match particularly significant. After failing to beat Hull, United cannot afford another slow start against a team that will arrive at Old Trafford with considerably less pressure than the hosts.
Carrick's response will be watched closely. The question is no longer whether United can recover from one poor performance. It is whether they can quickly eliminate the weaknesses that allowed Hull to expose them.
Manchester United have spent years attempting to close the gap between themselves and the Premier League's leading clubs. That process will require patience, but performances like this will inevitably raise questions about how quickly the club can return to the level expected of them.
The 2026/27 campaign is only one match old. But Hull City have already ensured that United's season has started with a warning.
Manchester United 0-2 Hull City.
And Carrick's first Premier League assignment as permanent manager has ended with plenty for him to fix.
