Man Utd beat Brentford 2-1 to edge closer to Champions League

Manchester United moved within touching distance of securing a Champions League place after a 2-1 win against Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday. Goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko gave United the lead, and despite a late strike from Brentford’s Mathias Jensen, Michael Carrick’s side held firm to cement their grip on third place in the Premier League.
The result puts United 11 points clear of sixth-placed Brighton with just four matches remaining, meaning they need only two more points to guarantee a return to Europe’s elite competition for the first time since the 2023-24 season.
How the win was built
United took control early when Casemiro headed home from a Bruno Fernandes set-piece in the 11th minute. That goal was his fourth in six games, underlining his importance to the team during this run-in.
United continued to press and eventually doubled their lead in the 43rd minute when Fernandes set up Benjamin Sesko for a clinical finish. Fernandes, who has been central to United’s improved form under interim manager Michael Carrick, now has 19 assists this season, putting him one away from equalling the Premier League record of 20.
Holding firm under pressure
United were less dominant in the second half as Brentford sought a way back into the game, but Carrick’s men managed the pressure well until Jensen’s curling strike in the 87th minute created a tense final few minutes.
United stayed disciplined in stoppage time, with goalkeeper Senne Lammens making vital contributions to protect the lead. The victory was a direct response to the recent focus on cementing a place in the top five, and it gives the squad a massive boost ahead of a crucial upcoming game against Liverpool.
The road to the Champions League
Under interim boss Michael Carrick, who took charge in January following Ruben Amorim’s departure, United have steadily climbed the table and regained their top-five form. Carrick has made a strong argument to be considered for the job permanently, and guiding the club back to the Champions League would be a major highlight of his tenure.
With the top five now almost certainly enough for a Champions League place, United’s position looks secure provided they maintain this level of consistency. Their final four matches will determine not just the qualification, but also how they finish in what has been a season of rebuilding and progress.
