Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Erling Haaland provided the decisive moment in the 26th minute, heading home from Antoine Semenyo’s cross to score his third league goal of the season.

The victory moved City to three wins from three and nine points at the top of the Premier League table, while Coventry suffered their third consecutive defeat since returning to the division.

Despite controlling much of the contest, City were forced to withstand a late Coventry surge as Gianluigi Donnarumma produced two important saves to protect the narrow advantage.

City dominated possession and territory for long spells but struggled to turn their control into a more comfortable scoreline.

Enzo Fernandez was initially named among the substitutes following his £125 million deadline-day move from Chelsea.

However, Nico O'Reilly suffered an issue during the warm-up and was forced to withdraw from the starting XI.

Fernandez was therefore brought into the starting line-up for his Manchester City debut, despite only arriving two days earlier.

The midfielder quickly became involved in City's attacking play and combined effectively with Cherki in midfield.

He also thought he had helped create another Haaland goal after the break, but the effort was ruled out because Fernandez was offside when he supplied the ball.

Coventry Threaten Late Comeback

City had opportunities to put the game beyond Coventry but could not find a second goal.

Matt Grimes then fired narrowly wide before Coventry produced their biggest threat of the closing stages.

Donnarumma made a crucial intervention to deny Ellis Simms from close range, using his face to keep out the substitute's effort and preserve City's lead.

Maresca Praises Hard-Fought Victory

The narrow victory was particularly valuable because City had to find a way to protect their advantage rather than simply overpower their opponents.

Maresca acknowledged that such matches will not always produce comfortable or attractive victories and stressed the importance of learning to win in different ways.

“The main reason why is nine times in this kind of game, you finish conceding,” Maresca said.

He also pointed to City's failure to extend their lead despite creating opportunities.

“First half was 1-0 but we could have scored one or two more. We kept them alive.”

The City boss was pleased with the way his players responded to Coventry's late pressure, particularly in defensive situations.

“The way we suffer together at the end was a good one.”

He added that City would need victories like this throughout the campaign.

“Not all the wins are going to be nice, we need this kind of win in every way.”

City Keep Perfect Premier League Record

The result leaves Manchester City with nine points from their opening three Premier League matches.

They have won all three games and currently sit top of the table, while Haaland has already scored three goals this season.

Coventry's difficult return to the Premier League continued, with Frank Lampard's side now having lost all three matches without scoring.

For City, however, the biggest positives were another victory, another clean sheet and a successful competitive debut for their record-equalling new signing.
