Malawi Reach Historic WAFCON Quarter-Finals Despite Zambia Defeat as Head-to-Head Rule Stuns Group C

Malawi secured one of the most remarkable achievements in their football history by reaching the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarter-finals for the first time, despite suffering a 2-1 defeat to regional rivals Zambia in their final Group C match.

While the result initially appeared to favour Zambia, CAF's head-to-head tiebreak regulations dramatically reshaped the standings after Malawi, Nigeria and Zambia all finished on six points.

Rather than considering overall goal difference, CAF applied its head-to-head mini-league rule involving only the three tied teams. Under that calculation, Malawi edged Nigeria to finish first in Group C after both sides recorded an identical goal difference, with the Scorchers advancing thanks to having scored more goals in the direct encounters. Nigeria finished second, while Zambia, despite boasting an overall goal difference of +6, crashed out.

The outcome also meant Nigeria progressed to the quarter-finals following their emphatic 6-2 victory over Egypt, while Zambia's dominant 6-0 opening win against the North Africans ultimately became irrelevant in the final calculation.

Zambia Dominate Early

The Copper Queens made the perfect start and were ahead inside two minutes.

Captain Barbra Banda forced the breakthrough after her powerful effort was pushed into the net by the Malawi goalkeeper following a difficult save.

Zambia nearly doubled their lead moments later when Eneless Phiri capitalised on a defensive mistake, only for goalkeeper Mercy Sikelo to produce an excellent save.

Malawi gradually settled into the contest but struggled to create clear-cut chances against a disciplined Zambian defence.

Their best opportunity of the opening half arrived when star forward Temwa Chawinga surged through midfield before unleashing a fierce strike that was brilliantly tipped away by Hazel Nali.

Zambia extended their advantage in the 36th minute through Prisca Chilufya, who finished confidently after an excellent run and cutback from Margaret Belemu.

The first half also saw a worrying injury to Malawi captain Sabinah Thom, who left the pitch on a stretcher after appearing to suffer a knee injury.

Scorchers Fight Back After the Break

Malawi emerged with greater urgency after halftime and created several opportunities to reduce the deficit.

Nali remained outstanding in goal, denying Madyina Nguluwe before producing another excellent stop from Chinyamula's powerful volley.

The breakthrough eventually arrived midway through the second half.

After a long pass from midfield caused confusion in Zambia's defence, Tabitha Chawinga burst forward before firing a powerful finish into the near post to make it 2-1 and ignite hopes of an unlikely comeback.

Malawi continued to push for an equaliser.

Rose Kadzere came agonisingly close with an audacious volley, while Asimenye Simwaka squandered a golden opportunity after being picked out by Temwa Chawinga.

At the opposite end, Banda nearly added a third during stoppage time but narrowly missed the target as Zambia searched for a decisive goal that would have transformed the qualification picture.

CAF Head-to-Head Rule Decides Qualification

Despite the defeat, celebrations erupted among the Malawian squad after confirmation that CAF's tiebreak criteria had secured their passage to the knockout stage.

With Malawi, Nigeria and Zambia all tied on six points, CAF disregarded results against Egypt and created a separate standings table based solely on matches between the three nations.

In that mini-league:

• Malawi finished first.
• Nigeria placed second.
• Zambia were eliminated despite their superior overall goal difference.

The outcome highlighted the significance of head-to-head results over total goals scored during the group stage.

Quarter-Final Fixtures

Malawi will now face the Group D runners-up, with Ghana or Mali still in contention for that place.

Nigeria, meanwhile, will take on Cameroon after producing a six-goal display against Egypt to secure qualification.

For Zambia, the tournament ends in heartbreaking fashion despite collecting six points and recording one of the biggest victories of the group stage.

The Copper Queens leave Morocco as arguably the unluckiest side of the tournament, while Malawi continue writing history with their maiden appearance in the WAFCON knockout rounds.
