Leeds thrash Newcastle 4-1 to climb third in Premier League

Leeds United climbed to third in the Premier League after demolishing Newcastle United 4-1 at Elland Road on Monday.

A Lewis Miley own goal, Jayden Bogle's strike, Dominic Calvert-Lewin's fifth consecutive league goal at Elland Road and a Noah Okafor volley completed a convincing victory for Daniel Farke's side.

The result also handed Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle his first defeat since taking charge of the club.

Leeds take control with two quick goals

Newcastle had started the season positively under Jaissle despite the departure of former manager Eddie Howe and key players Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali during the off-season.

However, Leeds quickly exposed the visitors' problems at Elland Road.

Newcastle suffered an early setback when Nico Gonzalez was forced off inside the opening 20 minutes and was replaced as a concussion substitute.

That left 18-year-old Sean Steur alongside 20-year-old Lewis Miley in the centre of Newcastle's midfield.

Miley then endured an unfortunate moment as Leeds opened the scoring. Ao Tanaka's strike took two deflections before looping towards goal, with Miley getting the final touch.

Only two minutes later, Leeds doubled their advantage.

Calvert-Lewin rose highest to meet James Justin's cross, with his header flicking off Bogle before finding the bottom corner. The goal was awarded to Leeds' right-back.

Calvert-Lewin scores again at Elland Road

Leeds continued to dominate as Newcastle struggled to recover from the early blows.

Calvert-Lewin then got his own name on the scoresheet and extended his remarkable scoring run at Elland Road.

The Leeds striker powered past Sven Botman before sliding the ball underneath Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.

The finish meant Calvert-Lewin had scored in five consecutive league games at Elland Road.

Newcastle were fortunate not to concede another goal before the break, but Leeds carried a commanding 3-0 lead into half-time.

Okafor completes Leeds rout

Leeds continued to create opportunities after the restart, with Anton Stach missing a chance to add a fourth early in the second half.

Stach pounced on a poor pass from Hornicek but attempted to dink the ball over the goalkeeper and sent his effort just wide.

Leeds eventually found their fourth before the hour mark.

Okafor volleyed home from the edge of the penalty area after Newcastle failed to clear a long throw, putting the hosts 4-0 ahead.

Newcastle managed to find a consolation goal in stoppage time when Bazoumana Toure reduced the deficit.

But the late strike could do little to change the outcome, with Leeds comfortably securing all three points.

Leeds climb to third

The emphatic victory takes Leeds to eight points from their opening four Premier League matches.

Farke's side now sit third in the table, behind only defending champions Arsenal and Manchester City.

Newcastle remain on five points but have dropped to 12th because of their negative goal difference.

For Jaissle, the defeat represents his first loss as Newcastle manager after the club's promising start to life under their new boss.
