Norris secures first win of the season at Hungarian Grand Prix

Lando Norris ended a frustrating start to the Formula 1 season by converting pole position into victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, giving McLaren its first race win of 2026 after a weekend that showcased both the team's pace and its strategic strength.

The British driver controlled the latter stages of the race after teammate Oscar Piastri suffered a heartbreaking retirement, while Max Verstappen salvaged second place through an aggressive tyre strategy and Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli strengthened his championship position with another podium finish.

McLaren's pace delivers at last

After several races where outright speed failed to translate into victories, McLaren finally capitalised on its upgraded package around the Hungaroring. Although Norris started from pole, it was Piastri who briefly looked set to take victory after moving ahead during the opening laps.

As the race evolved, differing pit-stop strategies and tyre management became central to McLaren's race plan, with Norris eventually emerging ahead following the final round of stops.

The British driver then managed the race comfortably before taking the chequered flag.

"My pace today was probably some of the best I've ever had," Norris said after the race.

Piastri's misfortune changes the race

Oscar Piastri appeared on course for another strong finish before mechanical issues ended his afternoon. Running in second place, the Australian reported gearbox problems late in the race before pulling off the circuit, triggering a Virtual Safety Car that reshaped the fight behind Norris.

His retirement not only denied McLaren a one-two finish but also handed rival teams an opportunity to make strategic late pit stops.

Verstappen maximises limited opportunities

Red Bull's Max Verstappen spent much of the race voicing concerns about the balance of his car. Despite those complaints, the reigning world champion benefited from a bold tyre gamble as Red Bull switched him onto soft tyres during his second stop.

That decision proved decisive after the Virtual Safety Car neutralised the race, allowing Verstappen to maintain track position and comfortably secure second place ahead of Antonelli.

Antonelli extends championship advantage

Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli continued his remarkable consistency with another podium finish. While victory remained out of reach, third place enabled the Italian to increase his lead in the Drivers' Championship heading into Formula 1's summer break.

His ability to regularly score heavily has become one of the defining stories of the 2026 campaign.

Hamilton's race undone by another penalty

Lewis Hamilton crossed the finish line in fourth but dropped behind Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc after receiving a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

It marked another frustrating weekend for the seven-time world champion, whose pace once again failed to produce the result Ferrari had hoped for. Leclerc was officially classified fourth, with Hamilton fifth.

Aston Martin shows signs of progress

Although Aston Martin finished outside the points, there were encouraging signs following the introduction of its latest upgrade package.

Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll were able to compete much closer to the midfield than in recent races, suggesting the team's development programme is beginning to produce measurable improvements ahead of the second half of the season. Further upgrades are expected before the Dutch Grand Prix.

Norris' victory gives McLaren valuable momentum heading into the summer break, while Verstappen limits the damage despite Red Bull's struggles throughout the weekend.

Perhaps most importantly, Antonelli leaves Hungary with an even stronger grip on the Drivers' Championship after another composed performance.

Formula 1 now pauses for its traditional summer break before returning for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort from August 21–23, which will also mark the circuit's final appearance on the Formula 1 calendar under its current agreement.
