Jürgen Klopp confirms Germany coaching talks after World Cup exit

Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has confirmed he is in discussions with the German Football Association (DFB) over becoming Germany's next head coach following the nation's disappointing FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign.

The announcement comes just days after Julian Nagelsmann stepped down following Germany's penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in the Round of 32, extending the country's recent struggles on football's biggest stage.

Speaking during his role as a television analyst for the World Cup, Klopp admitted the federation had already contacted him about succeeding Nagelsmann.

Klopp says he is ready to return

Klopp revealed that the exhaustion which prompted him to leave Liverpool in 2024 has now disappeared after nearly two years away from club management. The 59-year-old said he now feels mentally refreshed and prepared for another major coaching challenge.

After ending an eight-year spell at Liverpool that produced Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup success, Klopp accepted a strategic leadership role overseeing football operations within Red Bull's global football network.

Despite that commitment, he acknowledged discussions with the DFB are underway.

However, Klopp stressed that negotiations remain at an early stage and any appointment would require careful discussions due to his existing contractual obligations.

Germany searching for a new direction

Germany's latest World Cup disappointment has intensified calls for major reforms across the national team. The four-time world champions have now failed to win a knockout match at the FIFA World Cup since defeating Argentina in the 2014 final.

They have also fallen short of expectations in three consecutive tournaments, raising concerns about the long-term direction of German football. Klopp believes the problems extend beyond the head coach.

Rather than placing responsibility solely on Nagelsmann, he argued that structural changes throughout German football are necessary to restore the country's competitiveness.

Klopp defends Nagelsmann

While many critics questioned Germany's performances during the tournament, Klopp praised Nagelsmann's coaching ability. He described the former Germany boss as an excellent manager who inherited deeper issues affecting the national team.

Klopp insisted that rebuilding Germany would require long-term planning, stronger player development and a renewed footballing identity rather than simply appointing a new coach.

Red Bull contract could delay appointment

One of the biggest obstacles to Klopp's potential appointment remains his current role with Red Bull. The German currently serves as Head of Global Soccer, overseeing football operations across the company's network of clubs.

Any move back into frontline coaching would likely require negotiations regarding his existing agreement before an official appointment could be completed. The DFB has nevertheless identified Klopp as its preferred candidate to lead Germany into the next international cycle.

Germany's elimination by Paraguay marked another painful chapter in the country's recent international history.

Despite entering the tournament with high expectations, they once again failed to progress beyond the opening knockout round. The disappointing campaign has accelerated efforts to rebuild ahead of future UEFA European Championship and FIFA World Cup competitions.

If appointed, Klopp would inherit one of the most demanding jobs in international football, with expectations of restoring Germany to genuine title contention.
