Jay-Jay Okocha honoured with Retro 1998 World Cup Award

Former Super Eagles captain Augustine “Jay-Jay” Okocha has been honoured by FIFA with a retroactive “Superior Player of the Match” award for his standout display in Nigeria’s famous 3-2 victory over Spain at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

The recognition revisits one of the greatest nights in Nigerian football history, when the Super Eagles stunned the European giants in a thrilling group-stage encounter in Nantes on June 13, 1998.

Okocha shared the moment with fans on social media, unveiling the silver trophy from a custom presentation case.

Hello, this is JJ Okocha. I’m about to unveil this special award being given to me by FIFA,” the 52-year-old said in a video posted on Instagram.
“It was given to me for winning the Superior Man of the Match in a World Cup game, Nigeria versus Spain, 1998. Special thank you to Michelob ULTRA and Copa90 for this amazing award. I feel so honoured to receive it.”

The Match That Defined A Generation

Nigeria entered the tournament as African champions but were still considered underdogs against a Spanish side packed with stars from La Liga’s golden era.

Spain twice took the lead, yet the Super Eagles refused to fold. Goals from Mutiu Adepoju and Sunday Oliseh sealed a dramatic comeback victory at Stade de la Beaujoire, sending shockwaves through the tournament.

The result remains one of Africa’s most celebrated World Cup triumphs.

More Than Just Flair

Okocha was already known globally for his dazzling footwork and improvisation, but the Spain match highlighted another side of his game: leadership under pressure. Throughout the contest, he dictated Nigeria’s tempo, carried the ball through midfield, and repeatedly unsettled the Spanish defence with fearless dribbling.

FIFA’s retroactive award recognises performances from past tournaments that predated modern match-by-match honour systems, giving overdue credit to players whose influence shaped World Cup history.

A Lasting World Cup Legacy

Okocha’s impact on the global stage extends beyond that single match. At the 1994 World Cup in the United States, he completed 15 successful dribbles against Italy in the Round of 16, still the record for the most completed dribbles in a single World Cup match.

That performance, combined with the Spain masterclass four years later, cemented his reputation as one of the most entertaining midfielders the tournament has ever seen.

Nigeria’s 1998 Run

Under coach Bora Milutinović, Nigeria also defeated Bulgaria in the group stage to qualify for the knockout rounds. Their campaign ended in the Round of 16 with a 4-1 defeat to Denmark, but the team’s fearless attacking style left a lasting impression on world football.

For many supporters, the Spain victory remains the defining image of that tournament.

Recognition Arrives During World Cup Fever

The honour comes as the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins across the United States, Canada and Mexico, bringing renewed attention to the tournament’s greatest moments and personalities. Okocha’s award is not just a personal accolade; it is also a reminder of the role African players and teams have played in shaping World Cup history.

Nearly three decades after that unforgettable night in Nantes, FIFA has formally recognised what Nigerian fans always knew: Jay-Jay Okocha was the heartbeat of one of the World Cup’s greatest upsets.
