James Harden leads Cavaliers’ stunning comeback against Pistons

James Harden delivered one of his finest postseason performances in years as the Cleveland Cavaliers rallied late to defeat the Detroit Pistons 117-113 in overtime on Wednesday night.
The victory gives Cleveland a 3-2 advantage in the Eastern Conference semi-finals and places the Cavaliers just one win away from booking a showdown with the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Harden finished with a playoff-high 30 points, while Donovan Mitchell added 21 in a game that completely shifted in the closing minutes.
Cavaliers produce late fourth-quarter revival
For most of the night, Detroit looked in control. The Pistons built a 15-point first-half lead and still held a commanding 103-94 advantage with just over two minutes left in regulation.
But Cleveland responded with urgency and defensive intensity when it mattered most.
A pair of clutch free throws from Evan Mobley tied the game at 103-103 with 45 seconds remaining, completing a dramatic late surge that stunned the home crowd.
The Cavaliers then carried that momentum into overtime, producing a decisive 13-0 run stretching from the end of regulation into the extra period while holding Detroit scoreless for nearly five minutes.
Cade Cunningham’s heroics not enough for Detroit
Despite the defeat, Cade Cunningham delivered a sensational individual display for Detroit.
The All-Star guard scored 39 points and registered nine assists, repeatedly dragging the Pistons back into the contest with fearless shot-making and aggressive drives to the basket.
Cunningham cut Cleveland’s lead to just two points with 25 seconds remaining in overtime, briefly giving Detroit hope of forcing another dramatic finish.
However, Harden calmly responded at the free-throw line, converting crucial late points and securing possession after intentionally missing his second attempt to run down the clock.
Cavaliers closing in on Eastern Conference Finals
The series now shifts back to Cleveland for Game 6, where the fourth-seeded Cavaliers will have their first opportunity to eliminate Detroit and advance. A victory would send Cleveland into the Eastern Conference Finals against New York, marking a major milestone in the franchise’s resurgence.
Meanwhile, Detroit must now respond under enormous pressure if they hope to force a decisive Game 7 back on home court.
Harden’s leadership emerging at the perfect time
While Cleveland’s postseason run has largely revolved around Mitchell and Mobley, Harden’s veteran composure and offensive control proved decisive in one of the biggest moments of the season.
The former MVP dictated tempo throughout the game, attacked mismatches effectively and delivered under pressure in overtime.
His experience could become increasingly important as the Cavaliers push deeper into the playoffs against stronger postseason opposition.
