Inter roar back from 2-0 down to beat Udinese 5-3

Inter Milan produced a remarkable comeback to beat Udinese 5-3 on Monday and maintain their perfect start to the Serie A season.

The champions fell two goals behind inside the opening 16 minutes before turning the match around with five goals of their own. The victory leaves Inter level on 12 points with Roma after four matches, with both clubs sharing the top of the table ahead of their meeting at the Stadio Olimpico.

Udinese stun Inter with fast start

Udinese made the dream start when James Abankwah headed home unmarked after nine minutes.

Jurgen Ekkelenkamp then doubled the visitors' advantage seven minutes later, finishing from close range to leave Inter facing an early two-goal deficit.

The hosts responded before half-time. Carlos Augusto reduced the deficit with a long-range effort that flew into the bottom corner before Nicolò Barella equalised 10 minutes before the interval.

The comeback gave Inter renewed momentum going into the second half.

Inter completed their turnaround in the 59th minute when Marcus Thuram fired home from inside the box following Andy Diouf's cutback from the byline.

Francesco Esposito then added Inter's fourth before Ange-Yoan Bonny made it 5-2 with 11 minutes remaining.

Udinese managed to score again in stoppage time through Idrissa Gueye, but the late goal was only a consolation as Inter secured all three points.

The result means Inter have won all four of their Serie A matches so far, keeping them alongside Roma at the summit.

John Stones injury concern for Inter

Inter's victory was tempered by an injury concern for John Stones, who limped off just after the hour mark with an apparent hamstring problem.

The England centre-back was making his first start since joining Inter on a free transfer during the summer.

Inter manager Cristian Chivu said Stones would need further assessment to determine the seriousness of the injury.

“I don’t know, I haven’t had a chance to talk to him,” Chivu told Dazn. “I think he felt something on his flexor [muscle], and he will probably need to get some tests done.”

Roma keep pace with Inter

Roma also maintained their perfect Serie A record with a 2-0 victory away to Torino.

Donyell Malen opened the scoring five minutes before half-time after pouncing on a misplaced pass from Torino goalkeeper Lucas Perri, following Paulo Dybala's interception.

Niccolò Pisilli sealed the victory in stoppage time, firing home from an angle after Gianluca Mancini kept the ball in play near the byline.

The result gave Roma four wins from four and kept them level with Inter at the top of the table.

Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini also praised the relationship between Malen and Dybala, highlighting the attacking understanding between the two players.

“Clearly, these are two players who are very talented individually, but they also complete each other as a pair. They combine beautifully to create goals in many games,” Gasperini told Dazn Italia.

Como climb to third

Como moved into third place after following up their winning Champions League debut against RB Leipzig with a 2-1 home victory over Parma.

Jacobo Ramón and Kaiki Bruno scored for Cesc Fàbregas's side as Como moved onto 10 points from their opening four league matches.

Fàbregas welcomed the result and said the victory was helping him understand the potential of his developing team.

“This is an important victory for me as a coach, because I am starting to realise what team we could become,” he said.

Real Betis beat Villarreal in La Liga

In Spain, Real Betis also continued their strong start with a 2-1 victory away to Villarreal.

Gerard Moreno gave Villarreal the lead, but Cucho Hernández and Natan scored for Betis as they completed the comeback and moved third in La Liga.

The defeat left Villarreal in the relegation zone after five league matches without a win, while the club had also lost their Champions League opener.

Moreno admitted Villarreal are struggling for results and called for greater unity within the squad.

“Right now everything’s going against us, teams are punishing us,” Moreno told Movistar. “We have to stick together and demand more of ourselves … maybe when we go behind, anxiety kicks in and it’s more difficult.”

He added: “It’s hard to explain [how few] points we have... we have to be a team now more than ever.”

Inter and Roma set for top-of-the-table clash

Inter and Roma now both have four wins from four in Serie A and sit joint-top with 12 points each.

Their next meeting at the Stadio Olimpico will give one side the chance to move clear at the summit, while Como remain close behind on 10 points.

Inter's recovery against Udinese ensured the champions stayed perfect despite conceding twice inside the opening 16 minutes.
