Herve Renard sacked as Saudi Arabia Coach ahead of 2026 World Cup

Herve Renard has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Saudi Arabia national football team, just weeks before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 57-year-old confirmed the news himself, bringing an abrupt end to his second spell in charge of the national team.
End of a second spell
Renard only returned to the role at the end of 2024, having previously managed Saudi Arabia between 2019 and 2023. During his first stint, he guided the team to the 2022 World Cup. He masterminded one of the tournament’s biggest shocks, a famous victory over Argentina national football team, who went on to win the competition.
Despite his departure, Renard reflected with pride on his achievements, highlighting his role in leading Saudi Arabia through qualification and onto the global stage.
A Strong Coaching Resume
Beyond his work in Saudi Arabia, Herve Renard has built a reputation as one of international football’s most experienced managers. He won the Africa Cup of Nations twice, with Zambia national football team in 2012 and Ivory Coast national football team in 2015.
He also managed the French women's national football team, leading them to the quarter-finals of both the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Olympic Games.
Who could replace him?
Attention now turns to who will lead Saudi Arabia into the World Cup. Reports suggest Georgios Donis is the frontrunner to take over, with negotiations ongoing between the Saudi federation and Al Khaleej, where he is currently in charge.
World Cup challenge ahead
Saudi Arabia face a tough task in Group H of the FIFA World Cup 2026, where they are set to meet:
- Spain national football team
- Uruguay national football team
- Cape Verde national football team
With the tournament fast approaching, the timing of the managerial change raises questions about preparation and stability. Renard’s departure comes as a surprise given his track record and familiarity with the team.
For Saudi Arabia, the focus now shifts to a quick transition and ensuring the squad is ready to compete on the world stage. For Renard, it marks the end of another chapter in a career defined by success across multiple continents.
