Lewis Hamilton wins first race for Ferrari at Spanish Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton delivered a statement performance by securing his first Formula One victory as a Ferrari driver at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, ending his lengthy wait for another race win while significantly boosting his championship hopes.

The seven-time world champion produced a flawless drive, finishing comfortably ahead of Mercedes' George Russell and McLaren's Lando Norris after Ferrari's bold race strategy proved decisive.

The victory also reduced Hamilton's deficit to championship leader Kimi Antonelli, whose race ended in heartbreak after suffering a late mechanical failure.

Ferrari strategy pays off

Ferrari opted for an aggressive three-stop strategy under scorching Barcelona conditions, with track temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius.

Hamilton's race was perfectly timed when a Virtual Safety Car period allowed him to complete his final pit stop with minimal time loss, handing him a decisive advantage over the chasing pack.

Although the strategy proved crucial, Ferrari's upgraded car also demonstrated impressive pace throughout the weekend, allowing Hamilton to control the race during the closing stages.

It marked the 106th Grand Prix victory of Hamilton's remarkable Formula One career and his first since joining Ferrari.

Hamilton ends long victory drought

Hamilton crossed the finish line almost 19 seconds ahead of Russell, delivering an emotional victory that had been eagerly anticipated since his move to Ferrari. Speaking over team radio after taking the chequered flag, Hamilton thanked both his team and supporters.

"You have helped me so much to achieve this dream. To the fans, thank you for reminding me who I am."

The triumph also marked Hamilton's first Sunday victory in nearly two years and confirmed Ferrari's growing competitiveness after introducing significant upgrades.

Russell returns to the podium

Mercedes' George Russell converted pole position into second place after surviving an intense race that featured multiple strategy battles. Russell admitted Ferrari's pace was beyond reach but welcomed his first podium finish in several races.

"We're happy to be back on the podium, but Ferrari were simply too fast today. We need to keep improving."

His result also reduced the championship gap to team-mate Antonelli after the Italian retired in the closing laps.

Antonelli suffers costly retirement

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli looked on course for another strong finish before a technical problem forced him to retire with only a handful of laps remaining.

The retirement significantly reshaped the championship standings, allowing Hamilton to cut the gap at the top to just 41 points while Russell also gained valuable ground. Mercedes will now investigate the cause of the mechanical failure ahead of the next round.

Ferrari's upgrades deliver immediate reward

Ferrari's development package showed clear signs of progress throughout the race weekend. Hamilton managed tyre degradation effectively despite the demanding conditions, while Charles Leclerc recovered strongly after a difficult qualifying session before later retiring from the race.

The performance suggests Ferrari could become a genuine title contender as the 2026 Formula One season progresses.
