Norway beat Côte d'Ivoire 2-1 to set up Brazil World Cup clash

Erling Haaland once again delivered on football's biggest stage, scoring a decisive late goal as Norway defeated Côte d'Ivoire 2-1 to secure a historic place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Manchester City striker bundled home the winner in the 86th minute after Patrick Berg's dangerous cross found him inside the six-yard box, sending Norwegian supporters into celebration and keeping their World Cup dream alive.

The victory sets up an intriguing knockout showdown against five-time world champions Brazil in New Jersey, with a quarter-final place on the line.

Norway make World Cup history

The result marked a significant milestone for Norway, who recorded their first-ever victory in a FIFA World Cup knockout match. After progressing from the group stage with impressive performances, Ståle Solbakken's side showed resilience against a youthful but energetic Côte d'Ivoire team that refused to back down throughout the contest.

With Haaland, Martin Ødegaard and Antonio Nusa leading the attack, Norway demonstrated both patience and clinical finishing when it mattered most.

Antonio Nusa opens the scoring

Following a cautious opening period, Norway finally broke the deadlock six minutes before halftime through Antonio Nusa.

The young winger received a perfectly weighted pass from captain Martin Ødegaard before cutting inside and curling a stunning effort into the top corner beyond goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.

The spectacular strike immediately became one of the standout goals of the knockout stage and handed Norway a deserved halftime advantage.

Amad Diallo sparks Côte d'Ivoire fightback

Côte d'Ivoire responded strongly after the break. Manchester United winger Amad Diallo was introduced shortly after the hour mark and transformed the game almost instantly.

He first produced a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Norway a second goal before showcasing his attacking quality by weaving through defenders and finishing brilliantly in the 74th minute to level the score.

The equaliser looked set to force extra time as the African side gained momentum late in the match.

Haaland delivers again

Just as extra time appeared inevitable, Norway's biggest star stepped forward. Patrick Berg delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area, where Haaland reacted quickest to poke the ball past Fofana from close range.

The goal was Haaland's fifth of the tournament, strengthening his position among the competition's leading scorers while underlining his reputation as one of world football's deadliest finishers.

Côte d'Ivoire pushed desperately for another equaliser, but goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland produced an outstanding save from Diallo's late free-kick to preserve Norway's advantage.

Young Elephants show promise

Although eliminated, Côte d'Ivoire impressed throughout much of the tournament with one of the youngest squads in the competition.

Teenage winger Yan Diomande continued to enhance his growing reputation with another lively display, while Diallo's impact from the bench highlighted the depth of emerging talent within the squad.

Their energetic performances suggest a bright future despite the disappointment of falling short in the knockout rounds.

Brazil await in the last 16

Norway now face one of the tournament favourites in Brazil, who advanced after defeating Japan. The clash will feature two of football's most prolific forwards in Erling Haaland and Brazil's star-studded attack, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

If Norway can reproduce the determination and efficiency shown against Côte d'Ivoire, they could pose a genuine threat to the five-time world champions.
