France cruise past Sweden as Mbappé fires Les Bleus into World Cup Round of 16

France produced one of their most complete performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, brushing aside Sweden 3-0 to secure a place in the Round of 16 and reinforce their credentials as genuine title contenders.

Led once again by captain Kylian Mbappé, Didier Deschamps' side dominated proceedings from start to finish, creating wave after wave of attacking opportunities before finally breaking Sweden's resistance.

Bradley Barcola added another goal while Michael Olise continued his outstanding tournament with two assists, helping France extend their perfect record in the competition.

Mbappé moves closer to World Cup history

Mbappé's brace carried significance beyond France's qualification. The Real Madrid forward now has 18 FIFA World Cup goals, moving into sole possession of second place on the tournament's all-time scoring chart. Only Lionel Messi remains ahead, making the race for World Cup history one of the major storylines of the knockout rounds.

The French captain has now scored six goals at the 2026 tournament, strengthening his position in the Golden Boot race. His movement, acceleration and composure once again proved too much for Sweden's defence.

France controlled the match from the opening whistle

France dictated possession early and consistently stretched Sweden's defensive shape with quick passing and intelligent movement. Les Bleus created numerous first-half chances before finally finding the breakthrough just before halftime.

Mbappé received a clever pass following a short corner routine, drove into the penalty area and rifled a powerful finish into the far corner to reward France's relentless pressure.

The goal reflected France's dominance after they had already struck the woodwork and forced several saves from Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström.

Olise continues outstanding tournament

If Mbappé supplied the goals, Michael Olise orchestrated the attack.

The winger produced another two assists to take his tournament total to five, underlining his growing importance in France's attacking system.

His precise through-ball allowed Bradley Barcola to double the lead shortly after halftime, before another perfectly weighted pass released Mbappé for his second goal of the evening.

Olise's creativity has become one of France's biggest attacking weapons, giving opponents another major threat alongside Mbappé.

Barcola adds another dimension

Bradley Barcola continued his impressive World Cup campaign with a composed finish that effectively ended Sweden's hopes of a comeback.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward's intelligent movement and direct running repeatedly unsettled Sweden's back line, complementing Mbappé's explosive pace on the opposite flank.

France's front three consistently rotated positions, making them extremely difficult to defend throughout the match.

Sweden struggled to contain French attack

Sweden found themselves pinned back for long periods and rarely threatened France's defence. Goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström prevented an even heavier defeat with several important saves, denying Jules Koundé, Michael Olise and Mbappé on multiple occasions.

Despite their defensive efforts, Sweden struggled to slow France's tempo or maintain meaningful possession in dangerous areas.

Paraguay await France in the Round of 16

France will now face Paraguay in Philadelphia on July 4 for a place in the quarter-finals. Paraguay arrive full of confidence after eliminating Germany in a dramatic penalty shootout, but France will begin the contest as favourites following another commanding display.

If Mbappé and Olise continue combining at their current level, Les Bleus will remain one of the most dangerous teams left in the tournament.
