FIFA investigated over 2026 World Cup ticket prices

FIFA has come under major scrutiny in the United States after authorities in New York and New Jersey officially launched an investigation into ticket pricing practices for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The probe follows growing complaints from football fans who claim ticket prices for the tournament have become excessively expensive and potentially misleading during multiple sales phases.

Officials are now demanding answers from FIFA regarding allegations of “artificially inflating prices,” creating false scarcity around ticket availability, and introducing higher-priced seating categories after initial ticket releases.

New York and New Jersey Authorities step in

The investigation was jointly announced by New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and New York City’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP).

According to Davenport, fans were allegedly forced through what she described as a “gauntlet of confusion, fake scarcity and impossibly high prices” while attempting to secure tickets for the tournament.

Authorities have now subpoenaed FIFA, compelling world football’s governing body to provide internal documentation and information related to ticket sales and pricing structures.

The investigation will focus heavily on whether consumers were intentionally misled during the purchasing process.

Allegations of Artificial Price Inflation

One of the major concerns surrounds FIFA’s use of phased ticket releases and variable pricing models throughout the sales process.

Authorities claim ticket prices for approximately 90 of the tournament’s 104 matches increased significantly across different sales windows, with some fixtures reportedly rising by an average of 34 percent.

Investigators are also examining claims that supporters were shown limited availability during earlier phases before more expensive seating categories later appeared on sale.

Fans have additionally complained about confusion regarding seat locations and category upgrades, especially for matches expected to attract global demand, including the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

FIFA defends demand for tickets

While FIFA has not officially commented on the investigation, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has repeatedly defended the tournament’s pricing strategy in recent months.

Infantino previously argued that the exceptionally high demand for tickets reflects the global excitement surrounding the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will feature 48 teams for the first time in tournament history.

Despite claims of overwhelming demand, reports indicate face-value tickets remain available for a large number of matches, including most group-stage fixtures.

That contradiction has only intensified criticism from supporters and consumer rights officials.

MetLife Stadium Final Tickets Under Particular Scrutiny

The investigation is expected to closely examine ticket pricing for matches scheduled at MetLife Stadium, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

Officials questioned why prices for certain matches appear significantly higher than previous World Cup tournaments despite FIFA repeatedly emphasizing accessibility for global fans.

Local authorities also raised concerns about transportation costs linked to the tournament. Earlier this year, New Jersey officials publicly criticized FIFA over expensive transport plans for supporters travelling to stadiums.

Rail fares between Manhattan and MetLife Stadium were initially announced at around $150 before later being reduced following backlash.

Growing pressure ahead of the tournament

The controversy arises during preparations for what is expected to become the largest FIFA World Cup ever staged. The 2026 tournament will be jointly hosted by United States, Canada, and Mexico across 16 cities and 104 matches.

With millions of fans expected to travel across North America, ticket accessibility and pricing transparency have quickly become major talking points surrounding the competition.

For FIFA, the investigation represents an uncomfortable distraction ahead of a tournament already under intense global attention.

Whether the governing body adjusts its ticketing strategy or maintains its current approach could significantly influence fan sentiment leading into football’s biggest event.
