Flavio Cobolli reaches maiden Grand Slam semi-final, sets up historic all-Italian clash

Italian tennis continues to enjoy a golden era after Flavio Cobolli battled past Felix Auger-Aliassime to secure a place in the semi-finals of the 2026 French Open.

The 10th seed overcame the Canadian fourth seed 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on Court Philippe-Chatrier, producing another composed performance to reach the first Grand Slam semi-final of his career.

More significantly, Cobolli's victory guarantees that an Italian player will feature in Sunday's Roland Garros final. He will now face either fellow Italians Matteo Berrettini or Matteo Arnaldi, creating the first all-Italian men's semi-final in Grand Slam history.

Cobolli responds after difficult start

The contest began in challenging conditions, with strong winds affecting both players throughout the opening set.

Auger-Aliassime adapted better initially and capitalised on a late opportunity to claim the first set 6-4. However, Cobolli regrouped after a brief break and returned to the court with renewed confidence.

The Italian immediately raised his level in the second set, overturning an early deficit before reeling off four consecutive games to level the match. Speaking after the victory, Cobolli revealed how he reset mentally following the opening set setback.

"I went to the toilet to think a bit and change something. I told myself this was the chance of my life and I had to give everything."

Consistency carries Cobolli into final four

Once momentum shifted, Cobolli took control. The Italian's aggressive baseline game, combined with his improved serving, proved decisive as he secured a crucial break in both the third and fourth sets.

Despite Auger-Aliassime's experience at the latter stages of major tournaments, the Canadian struggled to find answers as Cobolli maintained his composure during the most important moments.

After three hours and 24 minutes, Cobolli sealed victory and became one of only two remaining top-10 seeds left in the men's draw alongside Alexander Zverev.

Historic moment for Italian tennis

While much of the pre-tournament attention focused on world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, it is Cobolli who has emerged as Italy's surprise standard-bearer in Paris.

His semi-final qualification ensures an Italian finalist regardless of the outcome between Berrettini and Arnaldi. The achievement represents another landmark moment for Italian men's tennis, which continues to produce elite talent across multiple generations.

It also comes exactly 50 years after Adriano Panatta became the last Italian man to win the French Open in 1976.

Panatta, who presented the Coupe des Mousquetaires trophy before this year's tournament, shares a unique connection with Cobolli. Both players developed their games at Rome's famed Tennis Club Parioli.

Top-10 breakthrough within reach

Cobolli's run in Paris could also lead to another significant milestone. The Italian is projected to make his ATP Top 10 debut when the rankings update following the tournament, provided Czech rising star Jakub Mensik does not go on to win the title.

Breaking into the world's top 10 would cap a remarkable season for Cobolli, who has steadily established himself as one of the most consistent performers on tour.

From Football Prospect to Tennis Star

Cobolli's rise has been particularly impressive given his sporting background. Before committing fully to tennis, the 24-year-old was regarded as a talented football prospect and spent time in the youth system of Italian giants AS Roma.

That competitive mentality has been evident throughout his Roland Garros campaign, where he has dropped just two sets across five matches. His consistency has now propelled him to the biggest week of his professional career.

"This is the best week of my life," Cobolli admitted after securing his place in the semi-finals.

Rankings boost and bigger dreams ahead

The Roland Garros run guarantees Cobolli a maiden top-10 ranking when the ATP rankings are updated next week. Depending on results elsewhere, he could climb even higher and continue his rapid ascent among the world's elite players.

With defending finalist Alexander Zverev and rising Czech star Jakub Mensik contesting the other semi-final, the tournament is now guaranteed to crown a first-time Grand Slam men's singles champion.

For Cobolli, the opportunity is clear.

What began as a breakthrough tournament has evolved into a genuine title challenge, and with an all-Italian semi-final ahead, the dream of lifting the Coupe des Mousquetaires is suddenly within reach.
