UCL: PSG punish Man City, Real Madrid stage late comeback as 78 goals set record

The UEFA Champions League delivered a remarkable night of football on Wednesday, with Paris Saint-Germain defeating Manchester City 4-2, Real Madrid scoring three late goals to beat Roma 4-3, and the competition setting a new scoring record for a single matchday.

Across Tuesday and Wednesday, teams scored 78 goals during Matchday 2, surpassing the previous record of 71 set during Matchday 3 of the previous season. Six of Wednesday's nine fixtures produced at least five goals, underlining an evening filled with attacking football and dramatic finishes.

Liverpool's 6-3 victory over LASK was the highest-scoring result of the night, while Aston Villa recorded a commanding 6-0 win against Fenerbahçe.

PSG deliver a blow to Manchester City

Paris Saint-Germain claimed a significant 4-2 victory over Manchester City, taking advantage of a devastating first-half display to leave the English side facing an uphill battle.

Désiré Doué opened the scoring in the 13th minute before producing an excellent lobbed cross for Ousmane Dembélé to double PSG's lead less than two minutes later.

Vitinha added a third in the 32nd minute, leaving City stunned as PSG's supporters celebrated inside the stadium.

Manchester City responded after the break through Erling Haaland, who headed home in the 53rd minute to give the hosts renewed hope. However, Maghnes Akliouche restored PSG's three-goal advantage ten minutes later.

Haaland struck again in the 75th minute, taking his Champions League tally to 61 goals in 60 appearances and offering City a late opportunity to mount a comeback. PSG had the chance to extend their advantage further in stoppage time, but Gianluigi Donnarumma saved Ferran Torres' penalty to preserve the two-goal margin.

The defeat came in City's first European fixture since facing charges relating to alleged financial rule breaches in the Premier League. The case added an extra layer of scrutiny to a difficult night for Pep Guardiola's side.

Real Madrid leave it late to stun Roma

Real Madrid produced a dramatic late comeback to defeat Roma 4-3, with Antonio Rüdiger scoring the decisive goal in the closing moments. Roma took the lead in the 20th minute through Marten de Roon's strike from distance. Kylian Mbappé equalised five minutes later with a deflected effort, marking his 100th appearance in the Champions League.

Roma regained control after the interval as Donyell Malen scored in the 51st minute and added another six minutes later to put the hosts 3-1 ahead.

Madrid appeared to be heading towards defeat until their substitutes changed the game. Carlos Espí and Endrick scored within three minutes of each other from the 85th minute to bring the visitors level.

Rüdiger then completed the turnaround with a close-range finish following a corner, securing a 4-3 victory for Madrid. The German defender kept his celebrations restrained on his return to Rome, where he previously spent two seasons between 2015 and 2017.

Liverpool hit six in LASK thriller

Liverpool were involved in another high-scoring contest, beating Austrian side LASK 6-3 in a match featuring a hat-trick from Bradley Barcola. The forward opened his Liverpool account after joining from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, scoring three times as the visitors established control.

Ronald Araújo opened the scoring with a header from a corner before Barcola added Liverpool's second in the 24th minute following a lay-off from Lewis Koumas.

Barcola struck again in the 37th minute, finishing after being played through by Florian Wirtz. Jeremie Frimpong then headed in Liverpool's fourth shortly after half-time.

LASK briefly threatened a response when Robert Ljubičić scored in the 63rd minute, but Barcola completed his hat-trick three minutes later after Frimpong's contribution.

Koumas added Liverpool's sixth in the 72nd minute, scoring his first goal for the club. LASK substitute Florian Flecker struck twice late on, including a diving header, but the Austrian side could not prevent defeat.

Aston Villa record biggest European win

Aston Villa enjoyed an emphatic European evening of their own, beating Fenerbahçe 6-0. Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley both scored twice, while Tammy Abraham also found the net as Villa recorded the biggest European victory in the club's history, according to the match report.

The result was among the most decisive performances of the matchday, with Villa's attacking players making the most of their opportunities.

Other Champions League results

Several other fixtures produced important results across the competition.

  • Real Betis 3-2 Porto: Isco scored a late penalty to secure victory in a heated encounter. Abde Ezzalzouli also impressed with a spectacular strike, while Gabriel Veiga and substitute Samu scored for Porto. Cucho Hernández equalised before Isco's decisive effort.
  • Bodø/Glimt 1-0 Borussia Dortmund: Fredrik Sjøvold scored the second-half winner as the Norwegian side claimed a notable victory.
  • Stuttgart 3-0 Slovan Bratislava: Stuttgart secured a comfortable three-goal win.
  • Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 AEK Athens: Shakhtar recovered to win a match played at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge in London.
  • Feyenoord 3-2 Como: Anis Hadj Moussa scored twice as Feyenoord came from behind to defeat the visiting Italian side.

A Champions League matchday to remember

The 78-goal total provided a fitting backdrop to a matchday defined by attacking ambition and late drama. PSG's win over Manchester City highlighted their ability to punish defensive mistakes, while Real Madrid once again demonstrated their capacity to recover from difficult positions.

Liverpool and Aston Villa also made emphatic statements with convincing victories, while results elsewhere showed that the competition remains unpredictable.

With the group-stage campaign continuing, Wednesday's results offered an early reminder that Champions League matches can change quickly, and that even a commanding lead is no guarantee of a comfortable finish.
