Barnes double gives Jaissle first Newcastle win in Carabao Cup third round

Harvey Barnes came off the bench to score twice as Newcastle United overcame West Bromwich Albion 3-2 in a thrilling Carabao Cup second-round clash at St James' Park.

The comeback gave Matthias Jaissle his first competitive victory as Newcastle head coach after the German replaced Eddie Howe.

Newcastle were twice forced to respond after Isaac Price put West Brom ahead and later restored parity from the penalty spot, but Barnes' late winner sent the hosts into the third round.

West Brom strike first at St James' Park

Newcastle started brightly but were stunned in the 19th minute when Isaac Price opened the scoring for the visitors. The West Brom midfielder produced an audacious free-kick that beat Newcastle goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen and gave the Championship side an early advantage.

Price strikes again from the spot

Barnes had other ideas. The England international struck again in the 81st minute, producing a composed finish to restore Newcastle's lead for the second time.

West Brom pushed for another equaliser during the closing stages, but Newcastle held firm. The visitors came close from a late free-kick, only for Jaouen to make an important save and preserve the lead.

The final whistle confirmed a 3-2 victory and Newcastle's progression into the Carabao Cup third round.

A crucial first win for Jaissle

The result marked Jaissle's first competitive victory since taking charge of Newcastle. The German had faced questions following a difficult start to his tenure, but the comeback against West Brom provided an important boost.

Newcastle's response was particularly significant after they fell behind twice during the match. The performance was not without problems, but the ability to recover from difficult moments and find a late winner will give Jaissle plenty of encouragement.
